PARK, Richard Gordon

August 15, 1950 – Medicine Hat, AB
February 15, 2017 – Calgary, AB

Rick beloved husband of Heather Park of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the age of 66 years.

Rick was born to Clifford and Gertrude (Gertie) Park in Medicine Hat, AB. The Park family relocated to Calgary in the early 1950’s. Rick was raised in South Calgary, attending Western Canada High School and later the University of Calgary. Rick’s life was dedicated to his family. He had a deep love for sports of all kinds and participated in many athletic endeavors through the years. Rick spent his entire career working for Canada Pacific Railway, retiring in 2011 after 42 years of service. Rick and Heather enjoyed numerous trips to sunny destinations with good friends David (Sam) and Elise McNeil (deceased). He enjoyed rounds of golf with his son Doug, his brothers and friends. Travel highlights included NFL games with Doug to many destinations in the USA. The pinnacle being, Rick and Doug attending Pro-Bowl 2009 in Hawaii. Shortly after Rick’s diagnosis with cancer in September 2016, Rick proudly walked Suzanne down the isle as she married a wonderful man, Brent Zorn. We will always treasure those memories. Over these last few months Rick was grateful to have the unwavering love and support from family and friends enjoying cozy fires and visits on his journey. Rick will be forever loved and missed.

Rick is survived by his loving wife Heather (nee McKinnon) and their children Douglas and Suzanne (Brent) Zorn; siblings, Sandy (Pam) Park, Terry (Maria Rehner) Park, Peggy (Bruce) Lyon; father-in-law Jim McKinnon, brother-in-law Kerry and special sister-in-law Ginette McKinnon and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

  12. Dwane Lauinger :

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time Heather…you have my deepest sincerest condolences.

Rick was always so much fun to work with, as you know, — I remember back in the Palliser Square Office (basement) when I worked (CG) alongside Gail Buker, as Chief, — we’d have Barry Buker on the North, Rick on the South, Rick Quast on the East, and Danny Dickinson/Gerry Hebner/Kenny Mathews on the West, on the weekends, I can’t tell you the number of times I had tears running down my cheeks from the jokes/discussions/exchanges we had, my cheeks were so sore from laughing that many times I had to get up and leave. That group was better than ‘Saturday Night Live’, and I swear we could have had a primetime sitcom slot on t.v..

I reminded Danny (GDRD) of this, just before Dan retired, about 6 years ago now, he smiled and agreed. Dan replied, “those were the good old days.”

    Take care of yourselves,

    Yours sincerely,
    Dwane Lauinger (DFL)

  13. Richard MacTavish :

Rick was a special co-worker and friend. Many times I went to him for guideance on how to do things on the job. I felt honoured when he came to me asking advise on situations. I looked forward to working shifts with him since first working with RGP in 1979 from my office in Swift Current. He was the No 1 Dispatcher/RTC for many years and is still No 1 to me. RIP my friend you are greatly missed.
