PARAMA, Irene Marie (nee Trembecky)

January 21, 1924 – February 13, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, “Nana”, and treasured friend, Irene, who passed away peacefully at Bow View Manor on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the age of 89 years.

Born in Haromhuta, Hungary in 1924 Irene and her family immigrated to Canada in 1929 where they settled in the Drumheller Valley. During her growing up years, Irene studied violin to mastery and added clarinet, saxophone, and piano to the mix, playing in numerous orchestras and dance bands at community events. In 1942 Irene was admitted into Calgary Normal School where she obtained her teaching certificate and shortly after began her first teaching position at Willow Creek, Alberta. In 1945 she married Walter Parama upon his return from service and they moved to Calgary where Irene spent the early years caring for their family of six children before she returned to teaching in 1960. Irene’s teaching career spanned over thirty years and took her from those beginnings at Willow Creek to the Calgary, Ottawa, and Edmonton Separate School systems. Irene loved children and she loved music and this was very evident in the number of years she taught school and her participation in many music festivals with her school children. Irene directed the choir at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Calgary for several years, and also participated in several choirs two of which in the later years were the Calgary Multicultural Choir and the Passion Play Choir. In retirement Irene loved to travel and her travels took her to such destinations as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, China, United Kingdom, and Ireland. She was also socially active. Her spirit and good sense of humour kept her in good stead as both a leader and a participant until just a few years ago. Irene’s failing health eventually required that she move to a long term care residence and it was our good fortune that she ended up at Bow View Manor in Calgary.

Irene leaves behind her children, Evelyn (Peter), David (Ann), Gerard (Bobbi), Janice (Kenn), and Margaret (Doug); grandchildren Kevin (Yvette), Warren, Liz, Treva (Jason), Stephen (Becky), Darcy, Amy (Kerim), Heather, Jessica, and Angelina; and great-grandchildren Cameron and Dakota; along with numerous extended family members. Irene also leaves behind her sister Mary Shaw; sister-in-law Margaret Trembecky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene is predeceased by her parents, George and Rose Trembecky, brothers Robert and George Trembecky, daughter Lynne, husband Walter, and granddaughter Christina.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive N.W.) on Wednesday, February20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 12. Irene Parama was my grade 6 teacher and music teacher throughout elementary school. I have so many wonderful memories of going to the mall singing Christmas carols and Christmas concerts. I remember playing the recorder and playing the handbells throughout elementary and how much I enjoyed these activities. It was wonderful teachers like Irene, that led me to be a teacher, so that I could be a positive influence in other children’s lives. Thanks Mrs. Parama:)

Mrs. Parama was my grade 6 teacher at St. Margaret school. I fondly remember her leading our school choir and teaching us how to play the recorder. I secretly coveted her shiny silver chalk holder and was so excited any time she allowed me to use it when it was my turn to right on the chalkboard. Rest in peace Mrs. Parama.
