PALMER, Sarah “Sherry” (nee Pelyhe)

July 15, 1926– Belapatfalva, Hungary
July 3, 2014– Calgary, AB

Sherry Palmer beloved wife of Gordon of sixty-six years, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the age of 87 years.

She was an adored wife, loving mother, special grandmother and proud great-grandmother. Her time with us was filled with joy, good friends and happy memories.

Sherry was born in Belapatfalva, a small village in Hungary on July 15, 1926 and was named Sari. In 1930, with her mother Roza and sister Margaret, they immigrated to Canada to join her father Gabor. They came to Calgary and settled in the Riverside area. After graduating from St. Mary’s Girls High School in 1944, she started working at Military District #13 as a stenographer and was employed there until she married Gordon in 1947. Sherry gave freely of her time, volunteering for several agencies until age 76. She was in the first group of volunteers for Meals-on-Wheels, and served on its board as secretary for several presidents. She was a fifty-seven year member of the Catholic Women’s League, serving as president at both Holy Name and St. Bonaventure Catholic Churches. She also co-chaired the CWL National Convention in Calgary. Sherry was friendly, cheerful and witty. She enjoyed her flower gardens, knitting, crocheting, watching sunrises and sunsets, laughter with her two sewing clubs and card group, but above all she loved her family and the happy times they spent together. Her family was her constant source of pride and joy.

Sherry will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gordon; her four children, Sharon (Brent), Rob (Linda), Patti (Brian) and Keith (Wendy); her nine grandchildren, Shannon (Manny), Shawn, Kelly, Robert (Anna), Bryan, Braden, Brett, Brendan and Richard; and two great-grandchildren Emerson and Bennett. Sherry had very special ties to her niece Betty Sardi (Les) and their families. Sherry was predeceased by her parents Gabor and Roza Pelyhe, and her sister Margaret.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Tuesday, July 08, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, donations may be made directly to The Foundation for Seniors’ Care, 1261 Glenmore Trail S.W. Calgary, AB T2V 4Y8, in memory of Sherry Palmer. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Unit 47 of the Rockyview General Hospital, and the compassionate nurses, doctors and staff at Chinook Care Centre.

In living memory of Sherry Palmer, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Judy & Tom Baxter :

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Gordon & his family for their loss.
Tom & I were neighbours of Sherry & Gordon in Shawnee. I remember walking by their deck everyday in the summer and enjoying all the plants that Sherry took such pride in and was extremely good at! She had a very green thumb. She said she “loved her pinks” and we all did. She will be missed.
    All our love,
    Judy & Tom Baxter
