Florence passed away peacefully of natural causes on Friday November 10, 2006, at the age of 91 years.
Born at the family home in the Bankview district of Calgary on August 6, 1915, Florence attended Holy Angel’s School, St. Joseph’s Convent in Red Deer and St. Mary’s School. A sixth generation Canadian, she was an associate member of the Calgary branch of the United Empire Loyalist’s Association of Canada and a life member of the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Descendants Association, the Fort Calgary Preservation Society through the Calgary Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Veterans Association, the Canadian Badlands Passion Play Society, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Centennial Museum, Regina and the Arch Confraternity of St. Joseph, Rabat, Malta. She was also a member of the Alberta Region of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Ranchmens Club, an honorary director of Camp Carmangay for disadvantaged youth, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation, an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, an honorary member of the board of the Canadian Rotary Museum, a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions Clubs International Foundation through the Calgary Heritage Lions Club, performance sponsorships of the Calgary Pro Musica Society and bursary sponsorship of the Rosebud School of the Arts. Florence was an original partner and director of the former Ferguson Supply group of companies formed on May 2, 1947, later a five branch dealership network for the sale of heavy-road construction and earth-moving equipment. These firms comprised dealerships for Euclid thereafter the Terex Division of the General Motors Corporation, the Industrial Division of the J.I. Case Corporation and the Dominion Road Machinery Company (Champion graders).
Florence was predeceased by her husband Norman Peter Ostrem Pallesen; daughters Laverne Marie Chrumka and Patricia Eleanor Ann McCaffery; maternal grandparents Margaret Sharpe Fitzpatrick and William Fitzpatrick, pioneers of Stony Plain, AB; paternal grandparents Frances Bunn Mannix and George Charles Mannix, pioneers of Stonewall, MB; parents Byryid Helen Mannix and Frederick Stephen Mannix; brother Frederick Charles Mannix, O.C., LL.D. (Margaret Ruth); sisters Eleanor Lynch (nee Mannix) (John Joseph), Margaret Nellie Walsh (nee Mannix) (Neil Robert), and Byryid Alicia (Alice) Kramer (nee Mannix) (Robert A. Kramer, KCG); grandson David Norman Chrumka; son-in-law Michael Thomas McCaffery Q.C.; and nephew Patrick John Peter Burns. Florence is survived by her son Peter J.M. Pallesen; grandchildren Colin John Chrumka (Carla), Bruce Allan Chrumka (Carlene), Jane Ann Chrumka (David Barclay), Jeffrey Patrick Chrumka, John Joseph McCaffery (Cynthia), Paul Norman McCaffery (Ishbel) Joanne Patricia Crook ( Russell), Gregg Michael Shaw (Joanna); six great grandchildren Kaitlyn Victoria McCaffery, Michael Victor Ernest McCaffery, Eva Lilly Shaw, Naomi Natalie Shaw, Jennifer Louise Crook and Jason Michael Crook; sister Luella Wilson (nee Mannix) (Eric Donald) together with eighteen nieces and nephews and their families.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W.) on Friday November 17, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Joaquim (Jack) Pereira, Rev. Wayne Poile and Rev. Henry Rosenbaum, SAC, Presiders. Thereafter, the Rite of Committal will be held at the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Erlton Street (1 Street and 31 Avenue S.W.). Gratitude is expressed to her dedicated physician Dr. Alexander Williamson Morrison and her personal caregivers Mrs. Lisa LaTouche and Miss Rebecca Vasseur. Flowers are gratefully declined.
