OWENS, Marjorie Belle (nee Robson)

February 3, 1944 – Calgary, AB
December 2, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Marjorie Belle Owens, a loved wife, mother and grandmother on December 2, 2013 at the age of 69 years.

Marjorie attended Western Canada High School and trained in nursing at the Calgary General Hospital. She went on to study public health at the University of Alberta. Over a career spanning forty years, Marjorie worked in public health in rural Alberta, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Calgary. She also worked within GI units at both Calgary General and Peter Lougheed Hospitals. She excelled at her work and was universally respected by those who worked with her.

Marjorie met her husband Robin Arthur Owens in high school. They were married forty-five years and had one son, Jacob Benson Owens.

Marjorie had a positive influence on everyone she met. Principled, pragmatic, trustworthy and wise, she was the reason her family enjoyed happiness and success. She loved to travel and was never happier than when in the navigator’s seat on a road trip. She and Robin had the good fortune to travel the world. It was when returning from their most recent trip that signs of the cancer that took her life first appeared.

Marjorie will be greatly missed by her husband and son, by Benson’s partner Andrea and their son Tate Owens and Andrea’s daughter Copelan. Marjorie is also survived by her sister Sylvia Ann Fleming (Bob); nephew Gregory Fleming (Jennifer); niece Susan Severyn (Darryn); and by grandnieces and grandnephews, Claire and Evan Fleming and Owen and Caitlin Severyn.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to gratefully thank the nurses, caregivers and doctors working within the Alberta Palliative Home Care Service as well as those at Foothills Country Hospice. They also thank the caring hospice staff and volunteers. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. 3. So very sorry to hear about Marjorie, my condolences to you and your family Rob. I am also sorry I did not get the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to you at the hospice (where we met). I know you provided a strong shoulder and sympathetic ear for my father (Al), and for that I will always be grateful. My heart goes out to you.

I will never forget as a child listening in on “bridge happenings” at my parent’s house or campfire “goings-on” while camping. It was Marje’s laugh that so infected me and usually made me laugh too – even given my ignorance of the topic at hand. I will always have these memories of Marje. My deepest condolences go especially to Robin and Ben but to all the family as well. CB

As a long-time friend of the Fleming family, I knew “Auntie Marj” through many Fleming family events for the last 20+ years. She was always smiling, easy to talk to, warm, funny and interested in catching up. To the entire Owens and Fleming family, I’m very sorry for your loss. I know how much you all loved her. Thoughts and prayers to you all.
