O’SHEA, Frank (Francis) John

October 9, 1924 – February 27, 2013

With unfailing good humour, our dad Frank died surrounded by his family. He will be remembered as a loving, generous and gentle man dedicated to his family and his Catholic faith.

Frank will be sadly missed. He is predeceased by Verona Smaniotto, his wife of 45 years and an infant son, Sean Byrne. He is survived by daughter Tara (Chris) in Calgary and children Shea (Justine), Aviva and Aidan; son Sean (Irene) in Oakville and daughters Scarlett and Vienna. The son of William O’Shea and Helen Byrne, Frank also leaves siblings Maurice, Henry, Leo (Florence), Father Arthur O’Shea and Anne Connolly. He also leaves numerous nephews and nieces in PEI, Ontario and Alberta.

Frank was born and educated in Iona, PEI and grew up on the farm. Upon returning from service in the Second World War, he earned a degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. During the oil boom in 1950, he moved to Calgary and was employed as a petroleum engineer mainly in Alberta and Saskatchewan but also later in England and Hungary. During his career, he worked for companies including Baroid, Western Decalta, Pure Oil, Union Oil, Ulster Petroleum and Sproule. However, the focus of his life was always his family. Frank liked to follow closely the successes and challenges of those around him. Frank enjoyed life’s simple pleasures like sharing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage and backgammon games with his children and grandchildren. With a soft Irish style and a smile, he loved to recount events from his childhood on the Island. To the end, his knowledge of names and dates was precise.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Dan Stevenot at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church (7624 – 39th Avenue N.W.) on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Thanks to all the nurses, doctors and health care providers at home and in hospital, in particular Dr. Christopher Gorrie, Dr. Peter Wash, nurses Lavurne, Nerissa and Karen Corry (K.C.) at Rockyview General Hospital and home care nurses Emilie, Pat and Robin from Home Care Seniors South Team. Dear Sean & Tara,
    I have great memories of being on the farm with Frank. I was telling the story this morning of a Winter day in the barn, which quickly turned into a fun snowball fight – kid stuff. We wish we were nearby to offer more support. We loved the visits and phones calls over the years. Keeping Frank and all of you in our prayers. We are really looking forward to seeing you all in May.
    Love Leo and Florence

    Tara and family, I am so sorry to learn of your loss of Frank, your beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a kind and gentle man who loved his family above everything else. He always had insightful comments to make about any topic and was so genuinely interested in everyone he met. Our thoughts are with you and your family. To quote an Old Gaelic blessing:
    “May the road rise up to meet you.
    May the wind be always at your back.
    May the sun shine warm upon your face;
    the rains fall soft upon your fields
    and until we meet again,
    May God hold you in the palm of His hand”

  20. Jackie Byrne :

    Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of sorrow. It was always nice to know that Frankie and Kenny kept in touch by phone and even after Kenny’s passing, Frankie always found time to talk with me (Jackie)over things, like what was going on in PEI and always very interested in all our lives and families and always ready to say prayers for me during and after when I was so sick. Lots of love and prayers, from the sons and families of the late Kenneth and Lillian Byrne (on behalf of the Byrne families of PEI a donation to the Calgary Inter faith Food bank Society, 5000-11 street S.E.) will be forwarded in Frankie’s memory
