October 9, 1924 – February 27, 2013
With unfailing good humour, our dad Frank died surrounded by his family. He will be remembered as a loving, generous and gentle man dedicated to his family and his Catholic faith.
Frank will be sadly missed. He is predeceased by Verona Smaniotto, his wife of 45 years and an infant son, Sean Byrne. He is survived by daughter Tara (Chris) in Calgary and children Shea (Justine), Aviva and Aidan; son Sean (Irene) in Oakville and daughters Scarlett and Vienna. The son of William O’Shea and Helen Byrne, Frank also leaves siblings Maurice, Henry, Leo (Florence), Father Arthur O’Shea and Anne Connolly. He also leaves numerous nephews and nieces in PEI, Ontario and Alberta.
Frank was born and educated in Iona, PEI and grew up on the farm. Upon returning from service in the Second World War, he earned a degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. During the oil boom in 1950, he moved to Calgary and was employed as a petroleum engineer mainly in Alberta and Saskatchewan but also later in England and Hungary. During his career, he worked for companies including Baroid, Western Decalta, Pure Oil, Union Oil, Ulster Petroleum and Sproule. However, the focus of his life was always his family. Frank liked to follow closely the successes and challenges of those around him. Frank enjoyed life’s simple pleasures like sharing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage and backgammon games with his children and grandchildren. With a soft Irish style and a smile, he loved to recount events from his childhood on the Island. To the end, his knowledge of names and dates was precise.
