OSBORNE-STEWART – Dorothy Miller

April 22, 1934 – April 16, 2011

We are sad to announce that Dorothy Miller Osborne-Stewart passed away on 16 April 2011 at the Peter Lougheed Center following a brief battle with cancer at the age of 76 years.

She was born in Dundalk, Scotland on April 22, 1934, was evacuated to Loch Katherine during World War II, and attended school in Musselburgh, East Lothian, before moving to Glasgow, where she studied nursing. After living in Hainault, Cumbernauld and Cambuslang she immigrated to Port Arthur, ON on June 27, 1967, and in Thunder Bay she became very well known in the community for her professional social work, particularly tending to the needs of the homeless and the abused. She opened Thunder Bay’s first shelter for abused teenage girls, and subsequently opened two shelters for battered women. In 1981 she met John Stewart, marrying in 1983 and eventually moving to Winnipeg, where she was the founding director of that city’s Ronald MacDonald House. In 1986 she moved to Manitou and retired with John, her cats, and her dog. Following John’s death she moved to Coleman, Alberta in 1997, where she lived with her beloved dog Kelpie and devoted herself to her garden and her cooking.

She will be dearly and deeply missed by her children, Haroon Akram-Lodhi of Toronto and Soraiya Boland of Calgary; and by her grandchildren Cameron Lodhi and Róisín Lodhi, both of Toronto.

A person with a profound sense of warmth and generosity to all, she was predeceased by John in 1992 and her sister Margaret in 2010.

A private family service was held. Please forward condolences through

Condolence Messages

  1. Stephanie Norris :

I worked with Dorothy in Thunder Bay in the home for teenage girls and for abused women. She was exceptional, kind, intelligent and funny….I remember going to one of the first East Indian restaurants in Thunder Bay with her (and co-workers) and she explained each dish that arrived. I am glad she had a nice life and wished it could have been longer. My sincere sympathies to your family at such a great loss of a lovely woman!

  2. McEathron Family :

We came to know Dorothy quite well through a friendship with her daughter Soraiya. Whenever we came through Coleman she always welcomed us with open arms.
I loved her sense of humor. She always made us laugh and was a lot of fun to be around. She said what was on her mind and it was often very funny.
I lost my mom about a year ago and I know how difficult this time is. Haroon and Soraiya our hearts go out to you!

Nigel, Patty, Ryan, Sean and Chad

  5. I have only recently learnt of Dorothy’s passing. My family and I send our deepest sympathy.

Our first days in Thunder Bay were spent in the Lakehead University residence, along with your family, all strangers in a new land, but Dorothy was a delightful new friend.
