ONEIL, Hillyard Ray

October 8, 1927 – January 28, 2013

Hilly Oneil passed away after 85 wonderful years. Hilly had a huge heart and was easy to love. He leaves behind his kids; grandkids, great-grandkids; nieces; nephews; a sister and brother; and more friends and relatives than can be counted.

Hilly was a hard worker all his life. He grew up out by Water Valley and was felling trees by 15. He also caught rough-stock for the rodeos; worked seismic back when shock waves were caused by dynamite; accidentally became a camp cook and did that for much of his adult life (gaining a reputation for the best shortbread ever). While his daughter was at home, he managed the Continental Motel in Calgary for ten years and then moved to a farm outside of Claresholm. In addition to farming he did Quality Control for Trus Joist; cooked at the Care Centre and for Jean Hoare’s famous Flying N Restaurant. Back in Calgary he drove Rocky and Jake at Heritage Park for several years; drove seniors to important appointments and transported cars for Thrifty Car Rental. On several occasions he received recognition for his volunteer work – most recently being awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee pin. But he always had time for play too: crib 3-4 times a week, poker on Saturday nights and dancing every Wednesday.

Come and help us celebrate Hilly’s life at Southview Community Centre (2020 – 33 Street S.E.) on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Hilly Oneil, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Michael Birnbaum :

    To Peg and all Oneils:
I have been honoured to get to know Hilly. Hilly was a down-to-earth, good-natured, good-hearted and friendly man. He and Peg had a relationship not only as father and daughter, but friends, card-playing buddies. Hilly drove the horse and wagon at Heritage Park with my then young kids in the back. He and Peggy later came to Daniel’s Bar-Mitzvah as honoured guests. I am also grateful to Hilly and Irene for giving the world, Peg, who was an important influence during my forelorn university years, a friendly and encouraging foil to Mike the Bike’s silly sense of humour. I have been privileged to know Hilly, Peg, Alan and a number of friends and family over the years. Thanks for sharing details of Hilly’s long and fulfilling life. May he rest in peace.

  3. Peg and Family:
I met Hilly 30 years ago as a good friend of Peggy’s. He had the best sense of humour and was just the nicest man I have had the pleasure to know. I still get a chuckle over the many sayings he would come up with. My heart goes out to you Peg, he was a wonderful man. He will always be remembered and truly loved. Take care.
    Love Sheron

  11. Tracey Thompson :

I had the greatest pleasure of volunteering at the casino with Hilly. We always worked the night shifts and I would tease him and the other volunteers about staying up passed their bed time. By the second night I was yawning away and Hilly and the others were all so spry! Hilly will be missed by many people. My thoughts & prayers are with the O’Neil family.

  12. Peg and Family,
Hilly was most certainly a very special person. We’ve only had the pleasure of knowing him since the birth of his great grandaughter, Ashley, but our periodic get togethers for lunch were always a wonderful treat for Ashley and myself. Peg, please accept our most sincere condolences from our family to you and your family.
    Love from the Bottoms Family
