October 8, 1927 – January 28, 2013
Hilly Oneil passed away after 85 wonderful years. Hilly had a huge heart and was easy to love. He leaves behind his kids; grandkids, great-grandkids; nieces; nephews; a sister and brother; and more friends and relatives than can be counted.
Hilly was a hard worker all his life. He grew up out by Water Valley and was felling trees by 15. He also caught rough-stock for the rodeos; worked seismic back when shock waves were caused by dynamite; accidentally became a camp cook and did that for much of his adult life (gaining a reputation for the best shortbread ever). While his daughter was at home, he managed the Continental Motel in Calgary for ten years and then moved to a farm outside of Claresholm. In addition to farming he did Quality Control for Trus Joist; cooked at the Care Centre and for Jean Hoare’s famous Flying N Restaurant. Back in Calgary he drove Rocky and Jake at Heritage Park for several years; drove seniors to important appointments and transported cars for Thrifty Car Rental. On several occasions he received recognition for his volunteer work – most recently being awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee pin. But he always had time for play too: crib 3-4 times a week, poker on Saturday nights and dancing every Wednesday.
Come and help us celebrate Hilly’s life at Southview Community Centre (2020 – 33 Street S.E.) on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
