OMAN, Edwin A.

August 31, 1930– Clanwilliam, MB
September 19, 2013– Calgary, AB

Edwin “Ed” Oman, beloved husband of Liz Oman, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013 one month after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Until this time, Ed enjoyed a full and healthy life for which he was always grateful. He loved and was loved.

As a Pastor, City Alderman and Provincial MLA, Ed was a faithful servant, touching many people through his contributions. When not working hard, he devoured books and played competitive sports like baseball and curling. Music was one of Ed’s passions – he was a musician, choir singer and director and season ticket holder to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Memories of moments shared with Ed will remain in the hearts of family and friends who were blessed by his life.

The youngest of nine children, Ed is survived by his sister Eunice Johnson. He was a loving father to children Beverly, Barb, Judy, Joyce and Jeff, along with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was also a solid friend and mentor to his step-son and step-daughter.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bonavista Evangelical Missionary Church (1509 Lake Ontario Drive S.E.) on Friday, September 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. to honour this remarkable man.

Condolence Messages

  1. My sincerest condolences to Ed’s family on his passing. I remember well the many years he touched my family’s life when we were involved with his church. He was a man who embraced life and showed compassion for others and leadership through his actions, words and music. This is a sad time for all who will miss this father, grandfather, husband and friend.

God bless you, Ed, and it was a privilege to have known you.

    Marie (Devon & Sarah)

  2. Ed was a great friend. Probably the best 68 year old ball player I will ever see. He could laugh at things that happened & laugh at himself at the same time. I think one of the greatest impacts that Ed left on me was his determination. I am sure sometimes this worked against him in life but his pursuit of reaching people was incredible. I am saddened by the loss of a good friend yet look for the day we will be reunited in heaven.

  3. Gale Clarke & Craig Friedt (tenants) :

Craig & I are deeply saddened by Ed’s death. He was always very kind to us. I had no idea how many good things he did in his life because Ed always seemed to be a very modest man, never talked much about himself. Always upbeat and cajoling. Although we rarely saw him, we will miss him. Our hearts go out to the family at this time.

  4. Valerie and Roland Priddle :

Dear Oman family: We remember Ed as a selfless Christian minister with great ambitions for his Lord. At North Calgary Community Church (N CCC) in the 1990s he never asked people to do anything that he wasn’t prepared to do himself–distribute flyers, lift that heavy piano on and off the stage at the Silver Springs Community Centre, set out chairs, organize Bible studies. His preaching and teaching were of a high standard. Many people attended and came to know Christ as a result of his ministry at NCCC who would never have darkened the door of a more traditional church. He took some hard nocks in life, some of the self-inflicted, but he always commanded our respect as a Christian leader and friend and we deeply regret his passing. Valerie and Roland

  5. Dear Eunice and family,
It seems sad that for the past 18 years we have lived within 100 kilometers of each other. We missed Ed at home-coming at Prairie last year. I do want to offer my condolences to you. I am not sure I can come to the funeral but I would be open to a visit. My wife and I had some good remembering at the 60th reunion last year.

with our sympathy and love, Ken and Vi

  6. As a friend and my skip at curling (Silver Fox League) for the past six years it was an honour and pleasure to get to know Ed.
Though we both came from the same part of Manitoba (he in Clanwilliam area and I in Neepawa) we did not meet until on the curling ice at the Calgary Curling Club.
It was always fun – even when we didn’t agree on the shot to play with Ed, and then over coffee talk about all the things he and others on the rink knew and were interested in. We will miss Ed’s smile and wise words. We are also glad that he didn’t wait around for those of us in the medical profession to fuss around, but got on with the rest of his journey with God.
Our sympathy to his beloved family.
