OLSON, Wilma Irene

August 24, 1929 – Openshaw, Saskatchewan
August 24, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Wilma Olson beloved wife of Marvin Olson of Calgary, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 24, 2014.

Wilma was born in Openshaw, SK and grew up on the family farm near Frobisher, SK. She moved to Calgary where she met and married Marvin in 1962. While raising their children, Wilma and Marvin were very active in their church and community. During her retirement years, she and Marvin traveled, followed their grandsons’ hockey careers and spent time at her “favourite place on earth,” their cabin on Sylvan Lake.

Wilma and Marvin’s home and cabin were always open to visitors and were always a warm place for family and friends to gather.

Besides her loving husband of fifty-two years, Wilma is remembered by her children, Earl, Vern (Nicky) and Carla (Darin); grandsons, Jackson, Keillan, Ryely, Kyle and Quinn; sisters Hilda and Helmy; brothers, Hugo (Hertha), Werner (Laura) and Oswald (Ruth); sisters-in-law, Sonja (George), Myrna (Keith) and Evelyn; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Unit 58 at the South Calgary Health Campus for their wonderful and professional care.

Condolence Messages

  1. Ray & Joan Suchan :

We would like to express our condolences to the Olson Family. Wilma was such a wonderful Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was her grandchildren’s greatest fan and supporter. Wilma was so friendly. Loved talking to her between hockey periods. It was obvious she cared for all the players, not just her grandsons. We heard about her Sunday dinners – what a wonderful family tradition. We were looking forward to the upcoming hockey season but it will not be the same without Wilma’s smiling face in the stands cheering on her grandsons. Marvin we are very sorry for the loss of your wonderful wife of 52 years. She truly was a beautiful person in every way.

  4. Ole and family – I have lost one of the best friends I had during the years of my marriage. Wilma was a true “aunty” to our children and to our grandchildren. She was much loved by all of us. We treasured the May 24th weekend which was spent at the cabin with the whole Olson family. She had the ability to make a person feel welcome and cared for, especially children whom she loved. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

  5. Wilma has been a treasured friend ever since she came to our place for a party in Calgary before her marriage to my lifelong friend Ole. Wilma was the matriarch of a great family of kids and grandkids. She leaves behind a wonderful legacy.
One of the loveliest friends I have ever had has gone home. I will miss you Wilma

  12. It was with great sadness that I recently learned of the passing of Wilma. Although it has been well over 30 years since I lived in Acadia, I have so many fond memories of time spent with Wilma and indeed the entire Olson family. Many summer days were spent carpooling to and from the local swimming pool in the classic station wagon of that era with Wilma at the wheel. Sleepovers were plentiful – full of laughter and lacking in sleep. During one such event I remember Carla and I sneaking up the stairs during the wee hours of the morning, our mission to secure a fudgesickle from the kitchen freezer. The plan would have gone seamlessly had I only remembered that there was a wooden door leading into the kitchen. The thud of my head hitting the door must have rocketed Wilma straight out of her bed. Once she confirmed both the absence of injury and burglary we all had such a laugh (as well as the coveted fudgesickle). That is how I remember my childhood – full of laughter and good friends. On behalf of the entire MacCara family, I extend to you all our deepest condolences on the loss of a truly wonderful human being. Wilma left her mark on the heart of all of us blessed to have known her. I have no doubt that her legacy of kindness will live on through her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly. Again, our deepest condolences. Love, Ruth (on behalf of Garnet, Beth and Allen MacCara)
