We are sad to announce that Henk died at Foothills Medical Centre early in the morning of Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the age 85, surrounded by his loving family.
Henk was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He had a happy childhood in the town of Blaricum, and then lived in Haarlem during the war. After the war he graduated from the Horticultural School of Boskoop and worked in The Netherlands and Finland. In 1953 Henk immigrated to Canada. After moving to Calgary, he became a geological draftsman and enjoyed a long career at Amoco Petroleum.
Henk was one of the early members of the Rocky Mountain Ramblers Association, a hiking club, where he met his beloved wife Ruth. Henk loved the wide open spaces of Canada, especially the mountains, where he spent many happy times with his family. Henk’s hobby was beekeeping and he served during the 1970s as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Calgary and District Beekeeper’s Association.
Henk suffered a serious stroke in 1985 but recovered enough to enjoy a long and happy retirement with his wife Ruth.
Henk is survived by Ruth, his wife of fifty-three years; his daughter Sonja (Curtis); his son Fred (Cobey); and his grandsons, Daniel and Jason. He is survived in The Netherlands by his sister Louise van Dooren-Oliemans and his nephew Robert van Dooren. He is also survived by his in-laws, Gerhard and Miriam Weisberg, Linda Weisberg and Orville Kaminski, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his in-laws, Harry and Henny Weisberg, Eric Weisberg and Esther Kaminski.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W.) on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
