NUGENT, Bernard Joseph

July 4, 1937 – May 7, 2012

Born on July 4, 1937 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and raised by Arthur and Cassie Nugent (nee MacDonald) our beloved Uncle Bernie passed away on Monday, May 7, 2012 in Calgary at the age of 74.

Bernie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his many close friends and extended family in Calgary and in the Maritimes. It was during his time as an Radiology technician at a Bathurst hospital that he met his lifelong friend, Jim Go and thereafter the entire Go clan. In his retirement, Bernie moved to Calgary to be closer to this adopted family. This Bluenoser shared with us his love of the Maritimes through his homemade salt cod fish cakes, and his yarns of life down home. Bernie’s tremendous sense of humor and unfailing kindness, quick wit and occasional sharp tongue, made him an integral part of the family. He was our friend, uncle, and grand-uncle and will remain now and forever in our hearts.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A Celebration of Bernie’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.ca

In living memory of Bernie Nugent, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Condolence Messages

  1. Lorraine& Bill Black :

    Please accept our deep sympathy.
You said it well in the obituary when you described Bernie as witty. At work in the X-Ray department, Bernie would always come out with the funny things. He lightened our days with his wit. He spoke so fondly of Jim (whom I met) Ernest, Vicky, Erlin and so many more. I can’t remember all the names but he loved you all a lot. He spoke of Tony an your Mom. He loved you all and was so happy with his wonderful adopted family. When I think of Bernie, I will have a ssmile on my face. He made us smile. Again, deepest sympathy.

Our sincere condolences to Bernie’s family back in the Maritimes, as well as to the Go family in Calgary, who were very dear to him. Bernie was a friend of the Morris family from as long as I can remember, through my Aunt Marge. I personally have 40 years of memories, listening to his stories, and no one could spin a yarn as well as Bernie. He loved to laugh, most of the time at himself, which endeared him to the many people who now mourn his loss. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.

  15. Karen(Nugent) Tugwell :

I just read the obituary of Bernie in the Halifax Herald, I am a relative of Bernie’s, my Father Jack Nugent who is deceased since 1977,at the age of 52 would have been his cousin. We are a family of 9. My father was brought up by Bernie’s father Uncle Art in NS as his Mother passed away at a young age in Nfld and his Father could not care for all the children, so he came to NS. I did not know Bernie well only met him a couple of times as I was just a young child, but I do remember him. My Father has only 2 sisters living in Nfld. in their 90’s and their families. Just wanted to send condolences from family in Nova Scotis and Nfld. Sorry for your loss. Karen Tugwell

  16. Dennis Ryan :

So saddened to learn of cousin Bernie’s passing. He and I met only by phone and had limited contact. Bernie was of the belief that my Aunt was his birth Mother which is very possible. He was proud to be included in my report on the Ryan family genealogy. I thank the Go family for adopting him as one of their own. I found his obituary by accident just yesterday as I was searching his contact info on Google to inquire if he had been negatively impacted by the Alberta Flooding. I was shocked to learn of his death so soon after his brother Jack Hartnett’s. I am especially pleased to read the many warm condolences expressed above. God Bless you Bernie and may God grant you the final rest and peace you so rightly deserve.

I feel cheated that I did not know you well during your lifetime. I am now trying to discover more about the Nugent family who adopted you as a young child. I have learned they were from newfoundland so that is a plus
