“Creating a Memorable Funeral Ceremony” was
developed when McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes recognized
that grieving families were communicating a greater need
to express their grief. More often today, families and friends
are seeking ways of providing memorials that truly reflect
the personality and spirit of the person who has died. Tributes
that accurately reflect a person’s life bring additional
meaning to the funeral ceremony, and can also help friends
and family with the grieving process.
When the ceremony is over the family needs to be satisfied
that they have done their best to honour the life of their
loved one. We trust the information provided in “Creating
A Memorable Funeral Ceremony” will present the resources
necessary to create a living picture of the way a person
has spent their time on earth.

Although funeral ceremonies are as unique as the person’s
life being celebrated, a successful funeral will have a
structure to it. Whether religious or not, a funeral ceremony
generally has these five sections. Not all funerals contain
every component, and not all funerals proceed in the same
order.
1) introduction
2) thoughts on life and death
3) tribute or eulogy
4) committal
5) conclusion
Every person is a unique individual, and each funeral ceremony
celebrates that. The best funeral ceremony should reflect
the deceased person’s life and style, while providing
comfort for those in attendance. The more personal a funeral
ceremony can be, the more meaningful it will become. Remember,
that the goal is to have people leaving a funeral service
feeling better than when they arrived.
Enhancement With Music
Music is an important element for a funeral service for
many reasons. To have music playing while people arrive
for a funeral can help to provide a more relaxing atmosphere,
as people are often apprehensive about attending a funeral
service.
During the ceremony, one or two specially selected pieces
of music (whether classical, country, contemporary or any
other kind) can personalize the ceremony.
McInnis & Holloway’s Music Coordinator will speak
directly with families to discuss the music that will best
suit their needs.
Tips on Public Speaking
Public speaking is difficult for a lot of people, and can
be especially hard at a ceremony that is as emotionally
charged as a funeral. Here are some tips to help make that
experience go smoother.
First and foremost, be prepared! It is vital to meet with
the bereaved family before the ceremony. This gives you
an opportunity to comfort them plus allows them time to
gather their thoughts.
Telling stories, is a great way of connecting with the audience
– people love stories and can relate to them.
