NOLAN, Charles Walter

March 12, 1933 – August 23, 2012

Charles Walter Nolan (Joe) passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the age of 79 years.

Joe proudly served the RCMP where his dedicated career took him to detachments throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, NWT and the Yukon. With a move back to Alberta he continued his career in security and investigations for the federal government including Agriculture Canada, Canada Post, Bank of Canada and the G8 Summit.

During his service with the RCMP, Joe was passionate and tireless in his volunteer efforts with community events and organizations; hockey was always at the forefront. Joe continued this dedication with the RCMP Veterans’ Association and Fort Calgary, as his interest in preserving and sharing the history of the RCMP was very important to him.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Inez; his children Kerry, Pat (Marion), and Jeff; three grandchildren, Riley, Kelleen and Shaun. As well, he is survived by his step-mother Evelyn, sister Sherry (Bruce), and three brothers Jack (Joyce), Pat (Carole), Bob (Maryann). He was pre-deceased by his mother Avis, father Charlie, and brother Ken.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at McINNIS @ HOLLOWAY’s Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, on Wednesday August 29th at 2:00 pm. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . The Nolan Family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Fort Calgary Preservation Society, P.O. 2100, Stn. “M” (106), Calgary, AB T2P 2M5.

In living memory of C.W. Nolan, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

Condolence Messages

  1. Dear Inez and family: It is with sad feelings that I send you my sincerest condolences. Joe and I trained together in the RCMP and, thus my knowledge of the man is limited as we were still in our late teens at that time. However, I had the privelege of meeting you, Inez, and once again to renew my acquaintance with Joe while attending the “U” Squad reunion some years ago which Joe and George Rechner were the principles in the planning. I have fond memories of my short time with Joe and I can only repeat how sorry I am to realize that he is not longer with us.
    Sincerely, Charles Hine

  3. Lauren and Phyllis McKiel :

I was privileged to work with Joe in Yellowknife for several years. I recall when he first arrived he went on undercover liquor detail, working as a labourer during the day on the Public Works Canada Building under construction, and then being around town in the evening trying to apprehend bootleggers. He was very successful in both jobs, however, the summer heat working outdoors was a bit tough on Joe.
A great guy who always had a laugh and a something good to say about everyone.
Our condolences to Inez and the family.

  10. Emil and Linda Knuth :

Linda and I would like to offer our condolences at this sad time. I was stationed with Joe at Melville and I have many fond memories of Joe. He was an excellent mentor. One of the most important things that I learned from Joe as a young constable was to get involved in the community. In later years I would meet Joe at different functions and we always had a laugh about some of our past experiences. Good bye old friend.

Inez, our sincere condolences to you and your family. I have many fond memories of my years working for “Joe” in La Ronge. He taught me a lot about police work and how to treat people with respect. Joe was never autocratic; instead, he was an educator and challenged his staff with probing questions all aimed at getting you to think. I cherish memories of those years. Joe
