NIZIOL, Mark

June 10, 1977– Edmonton, AB
September 4, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Mark Niziol beloved husband of Colin Carter of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, September 4,2013, at the age of 36 years.

Mark was born June 10, 1977 in Edmonton, AB growing up in both his home town, Red Deer and then later moving on to Calgary. Calgary brought him great joy in seeing the successful business of Interact Public Relations Inc. flourish and being with his love Colin for twelve years. Mark had many loves in his life; work, Colin, his dear family and his affinity for anything tech. Even though Mark was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2013 he was able to experience the serenity of Africa in March and was filled with life on his first visit to New York in May. Upon being diagnosed, the first thing he asked was to be married. He and Colin were married on February 2, 2013 and enjoyed the most special day of their lives.

Mark is also survived by his parents Carol Niziol, Frank Niziol (Norah Ramsay) , his sister Jennifer Niziol, and uncle Don Smith and aunt Sue Smith.

A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Mark Niziol, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  14. Dearest Mark,

I wish we could have kept in touch over the years. I am so grateful that we got the chance to spend some time together earlier in the summer. It was wonderful to reminisce about the old times and to have had the chance to meet your husband. I will never forget you and your friendship. You were one of my first friends at MAC and you made high school bearable. You will forever be in my heart.

Dear Colin, Carol, Jenny, and Frank,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It has been years since I hung around the Niziol homestead, took trips with Mark down to Red Deer, and heard about this new “beau” in Calgary (can a decade have passed?!) – but I hold these memories dear at this time. Mark had the ability to deeply touch those around him – and his charm and wit will be long remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  19. I worked with Mark for many years (mainly via email and phone, but a number of times in person also) while I worked for Citytv and the Edmonton Film Festival, and I always had such great conversations with him. This is just such shocking news, and while I never had the opportunity to meet his husband or parents, I wanted to pass along to all of you my deepest condolences during this very difficult time. I am so very sorry for your loss.

  23. Although I didn’t know Mark well, the few times I did get to know him made an impact. He was a very genuine, and kind man. His bravery during his battle actually turned around a few of my friends lives for the better. Without even knowing it he inspired people to be stronger and taught them to embrace everything that is great in their lives and live life to the fullest. He made them better people. I am honoured that I had the opportunity to have him in my life even if it was only on a few occasions. He will be missed by everyone that knew him. My heart goes out to his family. In your time of need, know that even those who knew Mark, have had their lives changed for the better.

  27. Dear Colin and Mark’s Family,

I was deeply, deeply saddened to hear about Mark’s passing. Mark was a kindred PR spirit whose path crossed mine in 2000, and I ever so enjoyed working with him throughout the years. He and I (surprisingly) had never met in person. Every time we reconnected we would have a laugh over how 3, 5, 10, 12 years had gone by and we had never ‘had that coffee’ yet. He was smart, generous and kind – I believe that everyone who knew him was lucky to have had him in their lives. A beautiful life taken away far too early. I shall miss him.

My sincerest apologies, I’m unable to attend the Memorial. My condolences to you all for your loss.

    Kindest regards,
    Anastasia

  32. Many people languish in life while others live it; Mark was one of the latter few. Although his passing has caused immense pain, take comfort in knowing that he lived more fully in 35 years than most could in 100. Today’s gathering of people who knew and loved Mark was testament to the fact that he was a very special person and touched many in his short life. My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time; take care of one another.

  33. Maura Halloran :

Dear Colin, Carol, Jennifer, Frank and Norah,

My deepest condolences on your loss and deepest respect. Of the many blessings I heard of Mark receiving this year, the greatest seemed to be the love and loyalty that surrounded him ~ in his husband, his family, his friends and his community. It is a testament to Mark that he was so surrounded by good people; how you drew together for him is a testament to you.

From the bike racks in grade five to winning the drama award together at MAC and all these years after, the integrity and generosity with which Mark met the world and the gladness he brought out in others make it a joy to remember him. The story of Mark’s past few months, how he lived, the choices he made and the beauty that arose from them are a story that stuns and inspires anyone with whom I share it. It is not just the courage to live out his dreams in the face of adversity that I admire, but the graciousness he maintained throughout and the strength of character and spirit you have all shown this year.

    With love and admiration,
    Maura
