NICOLAY, Doris Norma

February 23, 1922 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
September 18, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

On February 23, 1922 in Winnipeg, MB, Doris entered this world not knowing how many lives she would profoundly touch on her journey. Doris took great pleasure in her role of mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, mentor and friend. She was truly an extraordinary woman whose greatest joy was her family. Doris enjoyed music, poetry, writing and entertaining. She leaves a legacy of love and faith to her children Sheila Claire Bouchard (Guy), Janice Norma Nicolay, Robert Martin Nicolay (Terra), and Perry Daniel Nicolay (Fiona); grandchildren Allison, Scot, Michelle, Heather, Brandon, Pedro and Fiona; and great-grandchildren Nicole, Matthew, Kelton, Olivia, Jackson and Kai Clarence Nicolay.

On September 18, 2014 this truly remarkable grand lady stepped from this world into eternity. Awaiting her arrival were her beloved husband Clarence (Nic) Nicolay, parents Norman and Myrtle Seymour, brother Perry Norman Seymour and countless friends welcoming her into paradise. Though we will miss her and cherish her memory, we believe that she will be among those who wait for us in eternity.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to express sincere gratitude and thanks for the personal care provided by Careco and CBI Services. Special thanks for the kind and profoundly compassionate staff on Unit 47 Special Services at the Foothills Hospital. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Doris’ name, directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Doris Nicolay, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. One of my fave stories about Bob’s mom happened shortly after she and Nic were married… Both were avid readers, so they each came to the marriage with their own pile of books… Once the collection was consolidated, Nic went through and wrote “Nic Nicolay” in the front of all the books (his and hers)… Doris, on seeing this, picked up her own pen and scribed “Mrs” in front of his name on all her books… a life force to celebrate! Love to all, Terra

  5. Grant Seymour (Kim Vallee) :

    Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
    Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
    Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
    Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
    Scribbling on the sky the message She Is Dead,
    Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
    Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

    She was my North, my South, my East and West,
    My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
    I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
    Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
    For nothing now can ever come to any good.

    W. H. Auden

  11. Leslee Hill :

    My mother, Eileen, and Doris are cousins…
    They didn’t get to see each other often in their later years, but always kept each other fondly in their hearts. I feel blessed that Doris and I reconnected in 2013, we managed to exchange some letters, photos and emails, I know she appreciated hearing about Mum. I only met Doris a few times, but will never forget her warm and loving nature, and the stories Mum told me about how much fun her and Doris had together as kids.

    With love. Leslee Hill (Eileen’s daughter)
