NICHOLLS, Ronald “Ron” Guy

NICHOLLS, Ronald “Ron” Guy

August 4, 1932 – December 12, 2011
“A SCHOLAR AND A GENTLEMAN”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Nicholls, a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and brother. Ron lost his battle with Parkinson’s Disease on Monday, December 12, 2011 and passed away peacefully at the Brentwood Care Centre, surrounded by his friends and family.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Marion; four daughters, Karen (George), Cathy (Kevin), Sue (Ty) and Janice (Denis); his six grandchildren, Brittany, Kirsten, Mitchell, Stephanie, Aisha and Nicole; his sister Clara; and brother Alf. He was predeceased by his son, Glen; brothers, Fred and Len; and sister Winnie.

After graduating from the University of Manitoba as an engineer in 1954, Ron moved to Calgary to pursue his career in the oil and gas industry. He soon started working at Amoco Petroleum, where he was held in high regard by his co-workers as he held several prominent positions. But Ron wasn’t all about work. He was also a romantic at heart. Early into his career, he met the love of his life, Marion Davis, and the two wed on December 8, 1956. Ron romanced Marion and swept her off her feet. He bought her long-stemmed red roses every Saturday for the next fifty years.

In addition to Marion, Ron loved going on picnics with his family in the Rockies, a good game of golf, fishing for trout and a competitive game of crib or gin rummy. His warm smile and melodic voice cheered up everyone who heard him sing. The family is happy that Ron is at peace, but he will always be missed.

A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at Parkdale United Church (2919 – 8th Avenue N.W.) on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta, #102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Westech Building, Calgary, AB T2H 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 243-9901, www.parkinsons-society.org. Our special thanks to all of the staff at Brentwood Care Centre who did an exemplary job, and to all of the doctors who have cared for Ron for the past few years. As well, special thanks to Jenny who was so kind and helpful to Ron.

In living memory of Ron Nicholls, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

    Marion and family,
I had the pleasure of working with Ron at Amoco Canada when he was Manager of the Joint Interest Group. I was Secretary for the group. Many a times he had us laughing and set the mood for the day. I too recall his whistling and above all his beautiful rendition of Home Home on the Range. He was a delight and we were all blessed to have worked with him. God bless at this most difficult time. Margaret

My sincere condolences to Marion and family.

I graduated in engineering from U of M the same year as Ron and worked with him in his early days with Shell. The photo in the paper is the way I remember Ron – always with a big smile and positive attitude.

I wish to extend my condolences to Mrs. Nicholls and the entire family.

Mr. Nicholls was an amazing person whom I admired, looked up to and respected enormously. I was one of the lucky ones that was able to spend time with Mr. Nicholls playing golf, going on shared family vacations and just talking about life while sitting on my parents porch on warm summer afternoons.

Mr. Nicholls, you will always be the Trivial Pursuit champion. May you and your son now embark on a grand golfing and fishing tour.
