Born Louisa Christina Sproule in a log cabin on a homestead in the Jarvis Bay District of Bashaw Alberta. She is survived by sons Robert Miller (Betty), Gordon Miller (Florence), daughter Barbara Biles, daughter–in-law Pam Miller, nineteen grandchildren, fifty one great grandchildren and twenty two great great-grandchildren, her sisters, Lena Stanford, Jean De Leeuw and her brother, George Sproule, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her first husband Robert Miller, daughter Sheila Lea, son James Miller, and her second husband Ron Newsom. Most of her working life was at Miller Hardware in Bashaw and later in three different hardware outlets in Calgary. Louise was an avid curler. She was president of the Bashaw Women’s Curling Club and skipped a rink at Calgary’s Big Four until she was 89. She was instrumental in starting the Bashaw Flower and Garden Show, was convener of the Bashaw Cemetery Committee, president of the Bashaw W.I. and was a District Honoured Royal Lady for the Order of Elks. During her retirement years she travelled extensively with her husband Ron Newsom. She was Nannie to her grandchildren, was the center of many family gatherings and had a particular affection for cottage life at Pelican Point. She will be greatly missed by family and all who knew her.
A Celebration of Louise’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
