NEWALL, J.E. (Ted)

August 20, 1935 – April 26, 2012

J.E. (Ted) Newall of Calgary, Alberta, died peacefully on April 26, 2012 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, at the age of 76.

Born in Holden, Alberta to Robert and Lillian (nee Sheldon) Newall, Ted was a proud Westerner and Canadian. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, he started his career with DuPont Canada in 1958, and married Margaret Lick on February 14, 1959.

Ted achieved great success in the business world, rising to President and CEO of DuPont Canada before taking the helm at Nova Corporation in 1991. He served on the boards of many leading Canadian companies, helped to inform national policy as Chairman of the Business Council on National Issues as well as the Conference Board of Canada. He also served as Chairman of the University of Calgary. In honour of his many contributions, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993. With Margaret, Ted championed numerous causes and together they established bursary programs for students who, as they once had to, must leave home to get a university education.

Busy as he was, Ted’s first priority was family. He always made time for, and took an active interest in, those around him.

Ted leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Margaret; children Alison (Emmett), Ian (Sheila) and Malcolm (Nandini); beloved grandchildren David, Edward, Robert, Cassandra, Elisabeth, Alexander, Gavin and Philip; his sister Sheila (Isaac Graham); his brother Glenn (Marvel); many nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends around the world.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Calgary Golf and Country Club “Centennial Room” (One and one half blocks west of Elbow Drive on 50th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the teams at Foothills Special Services and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, as well as Focus on Caring and Alberta Home Care for their support and compassion. If friends so desire donations can be made directly to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 1600, Toronto ON, M4R 1K8.

In living memory of Ted Newall, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

  3. Rogers Ludgate :

It was with great sadness that we heard of Ted’s passing though DAC. He was a truly great leader in DuPont and he kept the that company in the spirit of its founders who respected all their employees at all levels. He was instrumental in making DuPont Canada a market/customer oriented Company and it was an honour to a small part of that development. Thanks Ted and God Bless You and keep your family strong in this moment of lose. Thanks Ted for the comfort you once gave my own Father with encouraging comments on a flight to Calgary. A privilege to call such a leader a friend. Elizabeth and Rogers Ludgate

    Margaret and family
We wish to express our hearfelt thoughts at this difficult time. Although we had the opportunity of meeting Ted only on rare occasions, our most memorable would be at your home in Tucson a few years back. It was a good time and visit and how easy and relaxed he was for a man of such stature. You will surely miss him dearly. Our deepest regards

    Dear Mrs. Newall and Family,
Pixie and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Ted. He was the leader of DuPont Canada during the years I was Medical Director before I moved to Conoco. He was very supportive of our health and wellness programs which included building an onsite fitness centre in the head office. I thoroughly enjoyed the regular meetings I had with him to discuss health issues in general. He certainly demonstrated a true care and concern for people. Pixie and I want to extend our sincere sympathy to you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Sincerely,
    Pixie and Dick Wilder
