My condolences go out to you Mrs. Neale and Curtis. I cycled with Curtis for a few years in Newfoundland and whenever I saw Rick, he would say hi and let me know how everything was going. I remember seeing his vinyl collection many years ago and I’m sure he cherished it. I wish you the best at this very difficult time.

Very sad to hear of Rick’s passing. We go a long ways back, skiing in Logy Bay as kids, PWC, MUN ’72-’77 with the Muse crowd, Gary Day et al, and Fred’s Records. He was a rare and always entertaining character. And a brilliant mind. My thoughts are with you, the Neale family.

We were all very sorry to hear of Rick’s passing, here on the Rock. He was truly a free spirit, who marched to his own drum, but took time to care about the people around him. We spent many happy times in the Physics Society in St. John’s. Rick, you will be greatly missed, my friend. Truly a great loss. My profound condolences to your Mom, Curtis and the family.

  10. R. W. Watkins ('Bob') :

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Neale family upon the lost of their son, brother and uncle.

I knew Rick from my university years in St John’s in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was a consummate combination of mentor, sage and surrogate big-brother. I’m sure many others saw him in a similar light.

Our mutual friend Edie Tapper once told me that Rick was rather astounded by my ‘extensive knowledge’ of the recording artists we both loved so much, and that I was his only worthy competition when it came to music trivia. That truly meant something to me. It still does.

Rick was a well-rounded individual — his interests and fascinations ran the gamut from the scientific to the artistic to the outright absurd. He found intrigue and amusement in everything from theoretical physics to Johnny Winter’s first album to the mechanical shark in the 1966 Batman movie.

A genuine personality and character, Rick was the sort of human being who resides with someone in memory for decades after — I am told by those who experienced his tutelage at Memorial University that he was undoubtedly the world’s most original lab instructor! Over twenty years since I last set eyes on him, from time to time I still find myself smiling at some of his witty quotes and unique observations; or thinking, ‘In a situation like this, what would Rick have said?’

Truly one of a kind, he will be sorely missed by all those who spent time in his resounding presence.

Rest in peace, King Richard of Breezeway. I wish your part in the cosmic conversation had never ended.

    Basically. Medium. Forever.

  12. I remember Rick from the Physics Society and I worked with him in the the Department of Physics of Memorial University (Newfoundland). It was a shock to hear of his sudden passing and I am very sad for his family and many friends. From his obsession with music to his famous bean sprout salad, to his constant “stealing” of my Indian snacks from my desk, I have many fond memories of Rick. He will be missed.

  13. Especially to Roxie, Paula Flynn and I extend our sincere condolences on the loss of your son. I crossed paths with Rick through Ward and your family, at MUN, and at social and public events in St. John’s. He was always a most interesting person to talk with.

  14. I am a retired Laboratory Instructor from MUN who worked in Science-Education in the Chemistry-Physics bldg and then later in Biology. I knew Rick for most of his time at MUN Physics and, like most people, respected his intellect and the contribution that made to what, I considered a pretty stogy department.
Please accept my deepest sympathy on his passing and my assurance that there are many of us will carry him in our memories.

  17. Randy Collins :

    To the Neale Family
I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Rick. We were friends back in the 70’s and 80’s and I always had a good time whenever I was in Rick’s company. We would have a drink or two, well, make that five or six and the topics of conversation would range from politics to rock and roll.
Believe me when I say that there was never a dull moment in the gab sessions we would have.
I sure miss the times though when we would talk about what was going on in music during that time frame. I don’t seem to have those conversations very much anymore and I miss that and the camaraderie of people like Rick.
May his spirit be guided safely home.
    Peace and Love To All.

  18. Paulette Campbell :

I am so sorry to hear about Rick’s passing. I met him first in 1987 where he mentored me into the ski scene in St. John’s after my return from Labrador. We remained friends and I appreciated his frank and wry humor and we had many interesting conversations. He was brilliant and had a lit mind. Please don’t throw away his 8 track collection (if he still has it). He wouldn’t part with his Kate Bush 8 track when I asked him for it once.
Rick will be so missed in Newfoundland…he was about due to make another visit there. My love to you as his family. This sudden loss must be so difficult.

I was saddened to hear the news of Rick’s passing today. We were good friends from high school and the Physics Society at Memorial. We shared a passion for the blues and also for birding … and we took a few trips to Cape St. Marys (with Nick Avis & John Wells). I recall those times with many fond memories of Rick who was always a true friend.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences on your loss

  24. Farewell Rick! I recall many dazzling conversations about everything and anything in the aftermath of our Physics Society socials. You seemed to have the angles all covered, knew the back-story, and spun your tales with an easy natural flare! You were an integral part of the educational experience, and I carry many fond memories of those days!
Sincere condolences to Curtis and Mrs. Neale.

  25. So sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. We were close friends at PWC. My chemistry lab partner. He introduced me to some really obscure music, teaching me to get out of the main stream. I loved the way his mind worked and am grateful for him helping me think outside the box. While others joined the crowd in claiming to be non-conformists, Rick lived out true non-conformity. He endured ridicule for it and just didn’t care. I hope that tree you plant has a twist in it that no other tree does.

    Please accept my deepest condolences.

  28. I was very saddened to hear about Rick’s passing. Haven’t seen him for many years but I will never forget him, he was a truly unique individual who marched to the beat of his own drum, with a caustic wit but without malice. You will be missed, Cupcake.

  29. I was sorry to hear of Rick’s passing; my condolences to his family, and to us all. I first met Rick through the MUN Physics Society – a Christmas tree thing as I recall. Later in the early ’80s Rick, I and some others shared a house for a year or so (The Manse). There are, indeed, many stories. I hadn’t connected with Rick much since his move West, but it saddens me greatly to think we won’t catch up again. I will miss him.

My sincere condolences to the Neale family.
I knew Rick through the Physics Society at MUN and had many interesting times in Ricks company before he moved out west. I will remember him as a free thinker and someone who was fearless in his own non conformity. I am left with lots of fond memories and the many life lessons and different ways of thinking about things he shared with me.

    RIP Old Friend
