Devdas (Dev) Nayak beloved husband of Vim Nayak of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the age of 80 years.
Dev was born in Shimoga, India, the youngest of seven children. He grew up in the city of Mangalore before completing his BSc. in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Bangalore. Despite having to learn the language, he continued his studies in Germany, where he earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Stuttgart and worked for the Swiss electrical manufacturing company Brown Boveri & Co, in Baden, Switzerland. He was transferred to Montreal in 1967 and again to Calgary in 1983. Devdas and Vimala were married in 1968 and their sons Anil and Arun were born in Montreal. In 1985, he left Brown Boveri to become the North American distributor for a German construction toy system called Lasy, which he continued until his retirement in 1999. His retirement years were very active, including traveling extensively, doting on his beloved granddaughters and in recent years enjoying daily walks with his dog in Fish Creek Park. He was an active member of the Chinook Outdoor Club and Prairie Mountaineers, two Calgary-based hiking clubs. A lifelong learner, he also studied Spanish in his retirement increasing his fluency count to seven languages. He was generous with his time and advice for family members and friends alike, many of whom considered him one of the kindest men they knew.
Besides his loving wife Vim of forty-four years, Dev is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Anil Nayak (Andrea Hay) and Arun Nayak; and two granddaughters Sophie and Tess Nayak.
