It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Nagata on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the age of 88 years.
Jerry was born in Sea Island, BC. After completing an apprenticeship in boat building, he moved to Ocean Falls, BC. In May 1942 the Nagata family was relocated to Welling, AB. Jerry married Toshiko Nakamura on April 2, 1949 in Lethbridge, AB. The young couple moved to Calgary in 1949 and settled in Rosscarrock. Jerry worked as a finishing carpenter for the Calgary Board of Education until his retirement in 1984. He then spent more of his time volunteering for various community and charitable organizations as he was always willing to lend a hand. Jerry was a founding member of Woodcliff United Church, the Calgary Japanese Language School, Kotobuki Seniors Society, and a long-time Elder of the Calgary Japanese United Church.
Jerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Toshiko; children, Wendy (Stan) Mahtoy, Warren (Rumiko), Les (Gloria), Alan, and Kim; grandchildren, Risa, Drew, Ayaka, Tetsuumi, and Marisa; sisters, Hisako Sameshima and Reiko (Ted) Mitsuishi; brother Roy (Luri); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Sanshiro and Saye; sisters, Fumi (Itaro) Suziki and Yukiye (Kunichi) Fukumoto.
A Memorial Service will be held at Woodcliff United Church (5010 Spruce Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
