MURPHY – Vincent John

November 24, 1922 – August 23, 2010

Dr. Vincent J. Murphy, beloved husband of Marion (Mayo) Murphy, of Calgary passed away on Monday, August 23rd, 2010 at the age of 87 years.

Vincent J. Murphy was born in Castor, Alberta where he was raised on the family farm. After completing school he began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist. When war broke out his brother, Tommy enlisted in the Air-Force. Vincent joined soon after and became a navigator in the RAF, Path Finder squadron #35. In June of 1944 his plane was shot down over enemy lines. He survived but spent the remainder of the war a P.O.W. residing in Stalag Luft III where he made many life-long friends.

Upon returning home Vincent attended the University of Alberta Medical School and completed his internship at the Holy Cross hospital in Calgary. He later specialized in Orthopedics interning at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. V.J. Murphy returned to Calgary joining the Associate Clinic in 1957 where he practised as an Orthopedic Surgeon until 1993. He continued to work in a consulting capacity until 2007. In 1957 he began his 51 year tenure as a Doctor for the Stampeders – a role he relished. He worked with the team, through all the highs and lows, until 2008. In recognition of his commitment he was awarded the Art Evans Memorial Award and is a member of the Stampeders Wall of Fame. Even during recent ill health he followed the progress of his beloved team and was ecstatic at the results of the 2010 season. Vince loved to golf. A member of the Willow Park Golf Club since 1965, he enjoyed many vacations with his golf buddies. He also enjoyed frequent trips abroad, cross-country & downhill skiing, gardening and spending time with his family, friends and P.O.W. buddies.

Vincent is survived by his beloved wife Mayo, daughter Shauna, sons Glyn and Tom, grandsons Chris and Ian, and cherished great-grandchildren Ava, Wesley, and Eli. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Claire and brothers; Gerry, Tommy and James.

Condolence Messages

  1. To all of Dr. Murphy’s family,
I knew your father from the Holy Cross – I graduated from the School of Nursing in 1977 and subsequently worked on 7east for some time following. Your dad never had too much to say to the patient – unless there was a box of chocolates at the bedside! He was a wonderful man to work with, he treated the nursing staff with respect, something we didn’t always get from the doctors. His patients loved him for the excellent care he gave them, and they were not unwilling to tell everyone who stopped by what a great guy he was. Years later I ran into him when then I was working at the Rockyview and he talked to me as if he had just seen me last week, I never forgot that. Just a great guy who will be missed by many.

  2. As medical colleagues I was saddened to hear of Vince’s passing. During my internship at the Holy Cross Hospital in 1980 I had the great pleasure to meet and work under Dr. Murphy, a very well respected surgeon. I had the honor to know him as a medical colleague over these many years and always enjoyed his friendship, good humour and gentle manner. I recall him coercing me (and other colleagues) in 1986 to purchase some Stamps tickets to “help the team” which was facing extinction at the time. I am proud to still hold those tickets and look up regularly during games to see his name proudly displayed on the Wall of Fame for his outstanding contribution to the team. I have been honored to know him and send my deepest sympathies to the family.

  4. I am a paraplegic with spina bifida. Dr. Murphy performed several surgical operations on my feet and ankles at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in the late-1960s. His operations help me to walk with the aid of crutches and leg braces until a few years ago. I always found Dr. Murphy to be a very friendly doctor who was always honest with you regarding your help. I shall always miss him as a former patient.

    Roger Smith.

  6. David L. Murray :

I became acquainted with Dr. Murphy when I was an Associate golf Professional at Willow Park G.C. I loved it when Vince came into the proshop. He always had time for me and we would talk football at length as I am an avid Saskatchewan fan. Vince was always offering me tickets to the Rider/Calgary games. I will always remember laying in my hospital bed shortly after having a heart attack in 2005. Who should be standing in the doorway to my hospital room but Dr. Murphy. I will always consider myself to be a better person for having known Vince. God Bless.

To Mrs. Murphy and family. I was a patient of his from the late 60’s until retirement a few years ago. About 7 years ago I slipped on my driveway in Pine Lake and fractured the left shoulder area and a tumor was found on my left shoulder blade. An ortho doctor was called to look at the mess. I asked this doctor if I could have the xrays and the report for my ortho doc in Calgary. He asked me who my doc was. I said Dr. Murphy. He perked up and replied “I trained under him”. Anyways last Monday I had both knees done by Dr. Perlau, Before I went to sleep, I asked him if he was as good as Dr. Murphy. He chuckled and replied, “Back then, he did everything.” This morning I got the stitch removed. I said to Dr Perlau, “You are almost as good as Dr Murphy” and he just chuckled. Anyways I will miss him.

Dr. Murphy was one of the finest doctors…He performed surgery on my ankle in 1990 and I had follow up for a few years. In that time frame, I looked forward to my visit with him as he was such a colorful, funny man. I remember one of the last times I saw him, he had just stopped smoking his pipe and he said he was grumpy because he missed it… I told him his grumpy was happier than most peoples!
I will always remember him and I am sure he has a special place in heaven…

We are sorry to hear of Vince’s passing but know what a full and enriched life he led. I have fond memories of skiing with the family when I was growing up. I remember Tommy tearing down the hills with Shauna and me following at a much slower pace. Dr. and Mrs. Murphy always made me feel included in the family ski trip. I also remember how fond my parents were of Vince and how he would make house visits to our place when my dad (Al Wallace) was ill. He was truly a caring and sharing man.
