MULDOON, Dr. Alfred Desmond (Des), FRCP (Edinburgh) and FRCP (Canada) Internist

April 25, 1921 – Clifden, Ireland
October 7, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Desmond Muldoon announce his passing on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the age of 92 years.

Des was born in Clifden, Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1953 as a young doctor. His father and two brothers were also doctors. Des graduated from the National University of Ireland and University College Dublin, 1943. Upon immigrating to Canada and settling in Calgary, Des was initially on staff at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Calgary General Hospital as well as consultant to the old Children’s Hospital. More recently his time was devoted to the Holy Cross Hospital where he was Chief of Medicine for several years. He was also a member of the Calgary Associate Clinic, Department of Internal Medicine for many years. His medical expertise has been highly recognized.

Des loved Ireland and everything Irish. He was very fond of the outdoors and pursued skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking and golf throughout the years. He was warm, gentle, generous, and had a great sense of humour. His spirit and kindness will not be forgotten.

Des is survived by Emily’s five children, John O’Sullivan (Rita), Oona McKinstry (Dale), Moira Sandberg (Roy), Ivel O’Sullivan (Neil Jaud), and Marcus O’Sullivan; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and their children in England and Scotland; nephew Michael (Susan) Muldoon and children in Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife Emily Muldoon (nee O’Sullivan).

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday , October 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W.) on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at “Holy Family Cemetery” Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to Father Lacombe Care Centre, 332 – 146 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2X 2A3, Telephone: (403) 256-4641, www.flccfoundation.ca. It is with gratitude and appreciation that the family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at C3 and Father Lacombe Care Centre for the excellent care given to Des over the past few years.

  9. I worked at the Holy Cross as a registered nurse from 1979 – 1985 and interacted with Dr. Muldoon as he made rounds and inquired about his patients. Although I was a new graduate, I was always treated with respect and I had high regard for Dr. Muldoon. A true gentleman and caring doctor. Thank you for your contributions in the medical field.
