MOSSMAN, Leona H. (nee Knickle)

November 13, 1917 – Lunenburg, NS
February 11, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Leona beloved wife of the late R.W. Mossman passed away on February 11, 2014 at the age of 96 years.

Mom was born in Lunenburg, NS to Herbert and Mary Alice Knickle. She was the youngest of 5 children, three brothers and one sister. She married her husband, R.W. (Moss) Mossman and in a few short years, which included the birth of their son, they moved out west as Dad joined the R.C.M.P. Over the next years Mom worked alongside Dad in a number of detachments in Manitoba. In this time they had their daughter. Mom became well known by friend and constables alike for her gift of cooking and baking. She also enjoyed church and singing in the choir as well as taking part in numerous groups. Mom had a special love for her Lord, her family and all children. One of her times of great joy was when she was asked to babysit children while their moms attended bible studies. She served in this way until she was 75 years old. Mom and Dad lived many years in Winnipeg after Dad retired from the police. After Dad was gone, Mom joined her daughter and son-in-law in a transfer to Calgary in 1994.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her brother and sister. She leaves behind her son, David (Lynn) Mossman of Kelowna, BC; her daughter Ann Marie (Murray) Thiessen of Calgary, AB; and her six precious grandchildren and nine precious great grandchildren. We will all miss you so much, Mom.

Thank you to Dr. McKenna, and to all the nurses, care workers, and recreation department at Bow Crest Care Center Calgary, that gave Mom love and help over the past three years.

A Private Family Gathering to honor Mom will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Telephone: (403) 955-8818 or the local Humane Society in your area.

Condolence Messages

  1. I am so saddened to hear of Leona’s passing. I am a volunteer at the Bow Crest Care Center on Saturdays where I come visiting with my dog (part of the PALS group). Leona was my favorite resident, and my dog loved sitting on her lap and enjoyed her loving pets and snuggles. I too enjoyed my time sitting with her, and will so miss her company on those Saturday mornings. Please know she touched my life with her sweet and gentle nature! My thoughts are with your family during this sad time.

  2. Mary Anne & Jim Sutherland :

Thank you for letting us know about your loss. Our thoughts and sympathy are with you. This has been a journey that we have been on together. Know that all the support and time you spent in the garden with your Mom was so important. You gave her your time and love when she most needed it and when it was most challenging. Thanks also for the time you gave to us and especially my Dad through your journey. We know what you are going through. It is such a blessing that our Moms had such long and productive lives. Our thoughts are with you at this time as we continue on this, the next part of our journey.

  3. Joanne Carter & Frank Grigel :

We are so sorry to hear about your Mom. She leaves behind a wonderful family and so many great memories. I often think of Mrs. Mossman and her little dogs and how they kept her active -and Marie’s stipulation that they had to be small enough to fit in the kitchen sink to wash their feet!
We are thinking of you all during this sad time. Take comfort in the memories that will forever be held in your hearts. Our deepest sympathies are with you.

  4. Jeff and Joan Stanford :

We hope that you and your entire family are at peace. Leona was an awesome friend and landlady. During my grad-school years, she always had a cup of coffee (with a little salt) ready and we would sit and talk and in warmer months garden. Your visits to Charleswood were joyful and I loved having the kids hang out with Toronto and me in the basement. Kenny wasn’t much younger than my youngest brother.

I think of Winnipeg often and Leona – those years there were good ones. I deeply appreciate your Dad and Mom and your entire family welcoming me. Leona remains a very significant part of my life. Thank you.
