MORRISSETTE, Ruth Kathleen (nee Nash)

April 27, 1923 – Calgary, AB
February 12, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Ruth peacefully passed away on February 12, 2014 at Royal Park Care Centre where she received exceptional care for several years.

Ruth spent her youth in Alberta and later moved to Quebec with her husband, Andre Rene Morrissette, where she embraced the Quebecois culture and mastered the French language very eloquently. After several Air Force postings, Ruth and Andy settled on the South Shore of Montreal where they welcomed each of their three children, Robert Morisset (Susan), Louise Kinsman (Phil) and Fran Morisset (Cheryl Becker). Later, Ruth returned home to Calgary. She was blessed with wonderful grand-children, Mitch Morisset (Jodi), Danielle Wilson (Jeremy), Matthew Vincelli (Lindsay), Erica Vincelli (Kory), Marc Morisset (Christina) and Andrea Vincelli; great-grandchildren Chanelle, Carter, Jayden, Jace, Parker, Maryssa, Taylor, Leah and Benjamin; step-grandchildren Ingrid Zschogner and Krista Zschogner and step-great-grandchildren, Nicola, Anna, Noah and Linden. Ruth leaves to mourn her very dear and beloved Gordon Lydiatt.

Ruth was responsible for many accomplishments in her volunteer work. One outstanding contribution was launching the first French Immersion program in Canada; also she served as School Commissioner for the municipality the family lived in. She was President of the home and school association, a first for a woman in that association. Ruth was Chairperson of the Health Committee and a member of the South Shore Regional Health Council. However her greatest legacy was that of her very beloved family, all of whom she valued and loved unconditionally until her very last day.

Condolence Messages

  1. Being the grandmother to my three children, I was someone who knew of her gentleness, her kindness, her smile (sometimes she’d have the habit of hiding that wonderful smile behind her hands placed in front of her face), her easy laughter, her generosity and her love. All who were within her presence will remember her kindly and with affection. Ruth was the quintessential lady.

  2. Fran and family,
Your mother sounds like a wonderful, accomplished woman who will be greatly missed. I myself suddenly lost my father 2 years ago and continue to feel that hole without his prescence in my life every day. You have great memories of her to help you through this difficult time that will eventually take the place of the sad memories of right now.
    Hugs, Tina

  4. Morgan Nash-Brault :

Auntie Ruth has shaped my life in ways she can’t imagine. I have the most amazing memories of visiting her and Uncle Andy in Quebec and marvelling at how she could switch from English to French at the drop of a hat. I was in awe of this magical ability, so much so that she would send me books in French from time to time as a child. I vowed to follow in her footsteps and learn to speak French like her. And over the past few decades I’d like to think I’ve come close to her eloquence and also her love of education. I, too, have married a francophone Quebecois and had children not far from St.Lambert. I wouldn’t have met Patrick had it not been for that the passion for French she instilled in me so long ago which years later led me to the University of Victoria French Club. I now even find myself studying to be a French Immersion teacher, something that wouldn’t be possible without all her work in the groundbreaking French Immersion program in St. Lambert.

So in just that simple step of sending me French books, she has ended up inspiring my life in the most fundamental of ways. Add to that her strength, grace and independence and she is remarkable woman for any generation but especially for a woman of her times.

I was so hoping to see you this summer Auntie Ruth but know that your inspiration lives on in so many of us. Say hi to Mom, Dad, Auntie Tor and Nana & Papa for me. I know they are so proud of the life you have lived and the family you have inspired.

All my love to Bob, Louise, Fran and all the cousins. My heart goes out to you all at the loss of your wonderful Mom and Nana.

    Much love,

  6. Geoff Lydiatt :

I looked to Ruth Morrisette as my second Mum as I lost my birth mother 15 years ago. My father Gordon Lydiatt was her last companion and deeply loved her as she was his love and his soul mate. I unfortunately couldn’t attend her services in Calgary but I will have her in my heart forever. Ruth, my father and mother were dear friends as they knew one another for years. I will always remember her kindness, her thoughtfulness and having a heart of gold for anyone that came into her life. Ruth will truly be missed but her special legacy will live on forever. May you rest in peace.

    love from Geoff Lydiatt
