August 9, 1928 – August 22, 2013
Irene Morrison, a former resident in Fort Saskatchewan, retiree to Mill Bay, BC and in recent years a resident of Calgary, died in the wee hours of Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the age of 85 years.
Irene was raised in Lisburn Northern Ireland alongside her brother Norman. Enterprising even as a teen, she worked with a veterinary practice exercising spirited horses and handling boarded dogs. Therein grew a life long love for animals and she ensured many were provided an excellent life within her home (Paddy, Boots, Sheila, Bounders, Zorba, Riley, Braveheart to name a few).
Irene met her life love Bert at the age of 16 marrying him just 8 days shy of her 19th birthday. Irene and Bert were in love right up to Bert’s death in August 2010. Even in their late late years they would dance together to a favourite album, after the guests had departed or just because the evening called for it. Irene was truly the source of the twinkle in Bert’s blue eyes.
They lived their early married years near Belfast but took a plunge; moving to Canada in 1953. Arriving by sea to Montreal they eventually migrated west to Alberta where they did a short hiatus in Edmonton before settling in Fort Saskatchewan. Irene was always a strong woman of enterprise, confidence and independence. Well read, intellectual and organized, she worked full time at Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., rising to the position of executive secretary; work she loved and excelled at. Irene was ahead of her time in many ways. Her financial acumen paved the way for her and Bert’s comfortable retirement to Vancouver Island in the mid 1980’s.
On the home front, Irene was a consummate entertainer, hosting lavish dinner parties, barbeques, bridge groups, open houses, birthdays and other special events. Her cooking abilities were fabulous, only exceeded by her ability to ensure her guests had a great time. She garnered many cherished friendships throughout her life.
In retirement bliss, Irene and Bert spent over 25 years on the Island, where they nurtured a beautiful home and garden and carried on their very social lives with new and old friends. When age and energy began making its mark they moved back to Alberta to be closer to family.
Irene was a passionate mom who loved her two children without bounds. She invested her heart and soul in ensuring they both had a loving home and every opportunity to succeed. It was her great joy to see both flourish through University and into successful careers. She was steadfast in remaining their greatest fans.
Irene spent her final few years in Calgary close to Catherine and her husband Rick. Like Bert, Irene was clear in her belief that the end is the end and at her request there was a simple cremation with no service. In defiance of her wish that there be no obituary, her children share this notice to ensure those who loved, worked and/or were friends with Irene know that her journey has ended. Take a moment to recall a happy memory of Irene and know that she made and lived a good life. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. She will be missed and cherished in the hearts of Matt and Catherine and their families.
