MORIN, Theresa

February 26, 1963, Devon, AB
September 6, 2014 – Calgary, AB

With profound sadness we announce the passing of the lovely Theresa Morin. It is, however, with great joy that we share with you the life Theresa experienced.

She is survived by the love of her life, Michael Stiles and their three beautiful daughters, Madeleine, Eve and Summer. Theresa was happiest when surrounded by Michael and the girls whether in their home in Calgary, Fernie or the family Ranch near Longview.

Theresa is survived by, and will be greatly missed by her large extended family; her Mother and Father, Emile and Lorraine Morin, her six siblings, David (Charlotte Echtner), Michele (Gordon Klit), Anne (Ross Newhouse), Daniel (Veronica Morin), Lucille (Thorne Forrest), Loralea (Dean Shwed) and her many nieces and nephews. Theresa had the great privilege of hosting a Morin Family Reunion in Fernie in August…the stories and memories are already legendary.

Arlene Stiles, will also profoundly miss her daughter-in-law and the loving care and support Theresa always extended to her.

Nature, active living and spirituality were the building blocks of Theresa’s soul. A life long learner and a natural teacher, Theresa loved sharing her enthusiasm for life with her family and friends.

Theresa’s passions were varied; travel, yoga, music, gardening, horseback riding, and all outdoor activities were things she enjoyed and resulted in many and varied groups of friends. Her skiing buddies, her 12th St. Gang, those in Banff, and all the friends from her various walks of life will miss her spirit.

Theresa received her teaching Degree from the University of Calgary and rounded out her education by cycling through France and mastering the French Language. This resulted in a teaching profession at West Island College, which she enjoyed for several years.

In 1995, Theresa and Mike started a family with whom they continued to travel and explore the outdoors. From Banff to Europe, Australia to Peru and many other places around the world, the Stiles Family Lived!

After a valiant battle with cancer, continually supported by her extensive network of family and friends, Theresa passed away surrounded by Love. Our sincere thanks go out to the staff of Foothills unit 47 for their gentle and thoughtful care of Theresa.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers the Stiles family request donations be made to the Southern Alberta Land Trust Society, P.O. Box 45016, High River, AB, T1V 1R7, www.salts-landtrust.org.

In living memory of Theresa Morin, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    With love to the Morin & Stiles families ;

It saddens me to the extreme to hear of Theresa’s passing. Although we were not intimately involved in her life, know that she had a place in our hearts.

I don’t believe my words will comfort you all that much right now, but I offer them to give a tiny bit of light during a gloomy time.

I’m sure Theresa was brave and strong in life. She will want all of you to be like that also. I find some comfort in the belief that things happen for a reason. Even the things we’d rather have differently, happen as they do for a reason. I don’t know the reason why a beautiful young mother would have to leave this world. I just know that something extraordinary will come out of this loss.

We all have a purpose, a place, a gift to give. Theresa gave us hers, lets all remember to give ours.

Love, Phil, Julie, Madison & Jesse

  16. William Reid naturalization garden—Theresa coordinated the schedule and gave instructions for summer watering so that the garden would be ready and waiting for the children in September. Watering, weeding, deadheading; watering, weeding, deadheading. I’ll never pass that garden without thinking of her and the swell hot chocolate and cookies that accompanied fall and spring clean-ups. thanks Theresa for nurturing that project and teaching all those children about gardening.

  19. Carrie, Ryan, Finn and Fyfe Scarff :

It is hard to find the words to express our family’s sadness about Theresa’s passing. We were each touched by her joy and spirit as her neighbours in Fernie. Ryan and I were inspired by her to be the best parents and couple we could be. She taught us by example without even knowing it; raising three beautiful gracious girls and being so deeply committed to and in love with Mike. We send our deepest sympathy to all Theresa’s family and our love to Mike, Madeleine, Eve and Summer. Know that Theresa’s special spirit will remain with each of those she touched, and there were so many.

  29. Jan and Helmut Kron :

To Mike, Madeline, Eve and Summer (Rosie too):
It wasn’t too long ago that the Stiles/Morin family moved into Polar Peak to become our new neighbours. It also became clear to us that we were the lucky ones. For those years that we have known your family you have brought joy, colour, humour and graciousness to us. Theresa inspired with a determination to make the most of those years. We watched as she slung her skis over her shoulder or rode away on her bike knowing the effort she was making. We heard the strings of her guitar and the gentle words she used with all of you. She transformed our living space (Polar Peak) and by being the force behind the landscape committee, gifted us with a beautiful garden which is one of the joys of our life. We share a passion for travel and while we travelled in the same foreign countries we talked about what you had shared with us. These and other treasures are the legacy that Theresa has left.
Our thoughts are with all of you.
    Much love,
    Jan and Helmut

  35. We are sending many blessings from Bali your way. I knew Theresa as a cousin first, a teacher second. Then just recently, when we hosted Maddy here in Ubud, I also got to witness what an incredible mother she was. Maddy is an intelligent, enthusiastic, deeply kind and fun-loving young woman, just as I remember Theresa being (even when our very –ehem– ‘spirited’ class of 8th graders did not deserve as much!). I admired a great many things about Theresa, including, now, the very graceful way in which she chose to exit this world… surrounded by so much love, meaning and connection. In Bali they believe death is a time for great joy as one is released into the spirit world… as you are finally freed from the confines of your body and able to be with your loved ones in an entirely new way. I sincerely hope that is just how it is for Theresa.

Much love, Renee, Steve, Lochlan and Seth in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.

PS. here are some messages from a couple of other people from that class who are now in are Uk, and the US:

“Oh my gosh, so sad. I loved Ms Morin and especially when we were out with the outdoors club. I remember once visiting her at her apartment after my first year of university and loving everything about where she lived and the books she had and her running stories etc. This was before she had kids but I often wondered about her. I hope she rests in peace and her daughters are well supported.”

“Very sad news and she is so young! If you are able, please pass along my condolences to her daughters and family and let them know of her lasting impact on her students. x

We will never forget how Theresa welcomed us recently into her home for a brunch, a bunch of travel stories and talk of the ups and downs of raising girls. I am grateful for having her as a cousin. It was an honour to be able to participate in the celebration of her life. Dan and Michael spoke with so much love and humour – Simon played with care and emotion in each phrase and note. I feel lucky to be in a family where cousins know and enjoy each other thanks to numerous family reunions and welcoming aunts and uncles. I am inspired strive to keep living a fuller life.
