MORAN – “Hollie” Olwen (nee Howell)

June 17, 1914 – February 11, 2010

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of this fine lady, “Hollie” Olwen Moran (also lovingly referred to as Gaggy) at the age of 95 years.

Hollie was born near Barnwell AB in 1914. She was part of a very large and loving family made up of the Howells, Yuills, and Burges. In total there were twelve children and they referred to themselves as the Shack Gang in reference to the building that they all shared out back of the store owned by her Mom and Dad, Margaret and Donald Yuill.

She moved to Calgary to look after the Thomas children when her sister passed away. She later met and married William Moran, and was blessed with her only child Margaret Ruth (Peggy). She leaves behind to celebrate her long and wonderful life, daughter Peggy and son-in-law Gordon Buckler; grandson, Trevor (Desrae Nicholson) Buckler; granddaughter Denise (Tracy Walter McCulloch) Buckler; great grandson, William Buckler; and bonus great grandchildren, Jasmyn and Josh McCulloch. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings as well as, husband William Moran, and close friend Ted Forsey.

She worked for the Albertan as head of circulation for many years and retired shortly after it became the Calgary Sun. Once retired she enjoyed a variety of social activities, especially with her birthday luncheon group, Peggy, Gloria Collison, Joan Graves, Dorothy Marsh and Bev Cummins. She loved spending time at Buena Vista on Mara Lake with Peggy and Gord, acting as the spotter whenever Gord skied, and was always included in any social activities for her laughter and zeal for a good time.

The light of her life was her great grandson William and as long as he was nearby she was happy.

A Celebration of Hollie’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, Suite 136, 440 10816 Macleod Trail, Calgary, AB T2J 5N8 Telephone: (403) 701-2876 The family would like to thank the residents and staff of Whitehorn Village for their care and friendship with mom over the past eight years, especially her happy hour group, and their “profound conversations”. Condolence Messages

  1. Joe and Maria Wood :

    Dear Peggy, Gord, and Family:

We send our most sincerest sympathies on the passing of Auntie Hollie. She was such a wonderful and special lady.

We will always remember the get togethers on Christmas morning at Mom and Dad’s house. The the most special guests were Auntie Hollie and “Santa”. Her laughter and story telling were by far the best thing on those mornings.

She always made everyone feel special, and for that she was loved by us all.

    Love to you all
Joe, Maria, Lucy, Joey, and Adam

  2. Gary and Dana Borkristl :

    Peggy and Gord,
Really saddened to hear about “Gaggy”. Our friend Anne who was one of her nurses at the Lougheed kept us informed and said she was doing so good, and that she had been released. So we were really shocked when we got the confusing e-mail from Jack Henderson. You are lucky to have so many years of great memories to cherish. Our thoughts are with you, Gary and Dana

I wish so much that we could be there to celebrate Gaggy’s life today. I will always remember her infectious laugh and wicked sense of humour. Gags has left an indelible impression on me, and, I’m sure, on anyone she ever met!

Sending you lot’s of love. You are all in our thoughts.

What an incredible lady our Gags was, we loved her dearly and will never forget her. Age made no difference, she fit in anywhere she went and was loved by all. So many great things to remember about her, how lucky we were to have her in our lives. We will be thinking of you today and will have a glass of wine in her memory.
