MOONEY, Ariana Elizabeth

January 27, 1957 – Wassenaar, Netherlands
March 23, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Ariana, beloved wife of Stuart Mooney of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at the age of 57 years.

Ariana Elizabeth Nelemans was born January 27, 1957 in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. Ariana was the youngest of five children and Ariana’s mother died when Ariana was three years old. Ariana loved her friends and her country but she decided that Canada presented opportunity and adventure. In 1976, when she was 19 years old, with the support of her sister, Ariana immigrated to Canada. She moved to Vancouver where she took a room at the YWCA, found work and started to build a new life.

In the summer of 1981 Ariana and Stuart met and fell in love. They moved to Toronto in 1984 and married in 1987. She pursued a career in property management, raised three boys and created a home for the family. Summers on Georgian Bay and the West Coast, travel, great friends and love were enjoyed by Ariana and shared with her family. In 2001 the family moved to Calgary where Ariana created a new home and friends. With life revolving around family, home, hockey, skiing and summers on the coast, Ariana proudly navigated her three boys through life. In 2009 she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Ariana dealt with cancer with the same resolve, grace and beauty that exemplified her life.

As early as kindergarten, Ariana developed and maintained friendships that have stayed the course of time. Her loyalty, commitment and joy of life have touched many people. Losing Ariana leaves a chasm in the lives of Stuart, Stuart, Michael and Steven. Her memory will bind us together, while her attitude and approach to life will guide us in the future. Ariana and I are eternally grateful for the tremendous support we received from everyone including nurses, doctors, friends and family who have done so much for our children and us.

A Funeral Service and Celebration of Ariana’s Life will be held at the Calgary Winter Club (4611 14th Street NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, March 27 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Provincial Office, Sun Life Place, 710, 10123 – 99th Street, Edmonton, AB T5J 3H1 Telephone: 1(866) 412-4222.

  3. Mary Jane McIntyre :

Dear Stuart and Stuart, Michael and Steven: Our family has fond memories of mothers standing in the Northlea School playground with the 4 year old boys running around with and after each other. Ariana smiling and not stressed by missing coats or muddy boots and clothing. And a backyard pool party on Thursfield where the Mooney’s had a HOT water tap outside to fill the wading pool.
Our sympathy to you at the loss of a wonderful wife, mother and friend.
Mary Jane McIntyre, Bob and Nathaniel Moenck

  4. Gail and Guy Hamel :

We learned this week that Ariana had died. Please accept our condolences. We have warm and vivid memories of Ariana, and of you and the boys. We still pick blossoms from Ariana’s rosebush and give a prominent place in the garden to the decorative rock that the boys hauled back from a cottage holiday. It must be a consolation to you that she lived to see her boys grow to be fine young men and that she left memories of many happy times.
