March 18, 1923 – January 14, 2012
Ernest Montgomery beloved husband of Elaine Montgomery of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his loving wife Elaine and daughter Kathryn. Also surviving him are his sisters Eileen Park of Belfast, Ireland, and Joan Burgoyne of Ottawa, Ontario. Ernie was predeceased by his brothers Edward (Ted) and John Montgomery.
The Montgomery siblings were all born and raised on the family homestead near Crossfield, Alberta. Ernie left home at age eighteen to join the Air Force during the Second World War. Following the war, Ernie moved to Calgary and worked in the oil patch, first at Shell Oil for over 25 years, and then as president of his own geological data systems company, Montech. He was well known for his love of tennis, hiking and skiing, and it was as one of the members of the Calgary Tennis Club that he met Elaine, his wife of near 46 years. Not only did they share this love of tennis and exploring the Rockies, but amongst their other shared interests was a love of classical music, especially opera, as well as other arts including local painters, which reflected his passion from a young age for sketching and painting in the outdoors. In his later years, his interest in local history was expanded to writing and publishing a number of short memoirs of personal, family and local history.
Friends and family are invited to share in a celebration of Ernie’s life at the family home, 8204 10th Street SW, Calgary, on Thursday, January 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. If so desired, memorial tributes may be made directly to the World Wildlife Fund, 409 Granville Street; Suite 1588, Vancouver, BC, V6C 1T2, www.wwf.ca.
