MONTGOMERY, Barbara Anne

May 6, 1928 – Toronto, ON
August 14, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Anne (Fralick) Montgomery announces her passing at the age of 86 years, in Calgary, Alberta.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 65 wonderful years William Thomas Montgomery. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Marilyn Montgomery, Kathy (Alan) Omotani, Carol Montgomery (Miles Barker), and Sandra Dyck, grandchildren Julie (Kevin) Dobson, Kari Burkinshaw, Patti (Mario) Feria-Estrada, Jenn (Clayton) Blancher, Mark (Daphne) Montgomery, Todd (Irena) Omotani, Laird (Alicia) Dyck, Lynden Dyck (Robyn Sedgwick), Aldene (Steve) Atkinson, and nineteen precious great grandchildren. Barbara is also survived by her sister Linda (Dick) Hulls and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Kevin Dyck.

Barbara was born on May 6th, 1928 in Toronto. She had many colourful stories of outings with her parents and her childhood in Ontario. At a young age it was love at first sight for Tom when he laid eyes on her at work; they were married on June 27, 1947 and celebrated 65 glorious years together. They had all four daughters in Ontario and moved to Calgary in 1961 where she and Tom continued to raise their girls. In 1998 Barb and Tom retired to Peachland/Westbank, B.C area where they continued to keep socially active in the community and have many visits from family. She moved back to Calgary in 2013 after Tom passed away.

Barbara’s health started to decline in January of this year. Barbara spent time at the Rockyview Hospital and then the last 4 ½ months at CareWest Sarcee in Calgary. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Memories fill each family member’s hearts on how special she was to everyone. The Montgomery family would like to thank all the nurses and aides of Unit One at Sarcee for the loving care and comfort they provided to Barbara.

A Celebration of Barbara’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E.) Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Forward condolences through Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta and NWT.

In living memory of Barbara Montgomery, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Arnie and Colleen Deans :

We were sorry to learn of Barb’s recent death. As neighbours in Crystal Springs Complex in West Kelowna we became very fond of both she and Tom with their love of life and positive attitudes. The world was no doubt a better place for them having shared it. Our condolences to the family. Barb will now rest in peace with Tom by her side.

We were so sorry to hear about your Mum’s passing. I always enjoyed both your Mum & Dad at church and other functions. It is great to know that they will be together again, as you didn’t very often see them on their own. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  6. Valerie & John Zuk :

Sincere sympathies are extended to Barb’s four daughters, many grandchildren and great grandchildren (I think Barb spoke of the sixteenth being born before she moved from West Kelowna ). We have missed both Tom and Barb, since Tom’s passing a little over a year ago and Barb’s move to Calgary. They both brought much cheer to our Newcomers’ membership in Peachland, the bridge table (Barb), and the many activities our club shared. It is wonderful that Barb could be with her cherished family members until her own passing. Thank you ladies for the obituary you provided the Kelowna Courier, and informing all their many many friends here of Barb’s end of life as we know it. Tom and Barb will linger in our memories.
