MOFFATT, Gerald Harvey (Gerry)

December 24, 1953 – December 19, 2012

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Gerry on December 19, 2012. Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Gloria; son Gregory (Julie) of Stouffville, ON and son Garrett of Calgary. He is also survived by his parents Eileen and Cecil Moffatt of Regina, Sask. and his sister Judy Stephenson (Denis) of Atlanta, Georgia. Gerry studied Chemical Engineering at the U of S in Saskatoon. In 1976 he moved to Calgary and started his career in the oil and gas industry at Dome Petroleum holding several positions including a stint in Edmonton as a plant engineer. He then worked in various positions at Canadian Occidental Petroleum, after which he was offered the opportunity through QatarGas to live and work in Doha, Qatar along with his family. After three adventurous years in the Middle East, Gerry and the family returned to Calgary where he worked for Nexen as a project consultant traveling regularly to Perth, Australia. Gerry then transitioned into Nexen permanently and one of his most exciting achievements was completing an offshore drilling project off the coast of Nigeria in West Africa. Throughout his career, Gerry travelled extensively internationally, touching every continent throughout the world; a piece of each destination placed a memorable experience in his heart. He enjoyed many great years working in the oil patch, acquiring friends and building countless relationships. Everyone knew they could always count on Gerry. He had a big heart and was willing to step up to the plate whenever help was needed. Gerry was passionate about music, both listening and playing. He also enjoyed spending his free time boating or playing golf out at his family cottage in Invermere, B.C.

A Celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at St. Thomas United Church (100 Hawkwood Boulevard N.W.) on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded through . In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Gerry may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation supporting the Tom Baker Cancer Centre at .

In living memory of Gerry Moffatt, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  6. I was very saddened to hear that Gerry’s brave fight had come to a sudden end. I’ve known and worked with Gerry for many years – he will be sorely missed.

You should be very proud of Gerry – he set such a wonderful example for the rest of us to follow. He was a true gentleman and a gentle man with a great sense of humour – a friend as well as a respected colleague. I’m so grateful that I had the priviledge of knowing and working with Gerry.

May your many happy memories of Gerry give you solace during these sad times. We’ve all been blessed by having Gerry be a part of our lives.

  11. Paulette Lachambre Baumgartner :

    Dear Gloria and family,
Just learned of your great loss. My sincere condolences. Gerry and Barry worked together back in the 70’s when they were both starting out in the oil patch. I always hoped our son (also an oilpatch engineer now) would meet Gerry one day and hear about your adventures in Qatar. I regret that this did not happen. May you find solace in reminiscing; let yourself smile as you remember the good times.
