MIONSEK, Esther Barbara Rosemary

October 8, 1917 – August 23, 2012

Our hearts are aching by the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Brentwood Care Centre in Calgary on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the wonderful age of nearly 95.

Esther was born in Oppeln, Germany (now Opole, Poland) on October 8, 1917. After completing high school, followed by special home economics training, she married Elgar Molkow in 1936, with whom she had two children, Ingrid and Gunnar. However, their marriage did not survive the tumultuous years during World War II. In 1947, Esther married Joseph (Joe) Miasek. Their son Peter was born in Germany and, in 1948, they emigrated from Germany to Canada, settling in Coleman, Alberta, where Joe had found work and where their daughter Viola was later born. In 1960, the family moved to Calgary, where Esther started a new career as a Nursing Aide at the Calgary General Hospital. After many years of dedicated work in a career that she loved and during which she made numerous dear, life-long, friends, Esther retired from the Calgary General in 1982 and then spent many subsequent years volunteering at local hospitals and nursing homes. In 2007, Esther was the vivacious guest of honour at her 90th birthday party, attended by family and friends from Germany and Canada. Soon after that, her strength began to diminish and she moved to the Brentwood Care Centre, where she lived with gracious good-humour, and enjoyed many visits with close friends and family, until her passing. Many heartfelt thanks are extended to the caring and compassionate staff at Brentwood and to Dr. Marie Patton for her diligent and gentle care.

Esther is survived by her four children: daughter Ingrid Mielordt (Klaus) in Clausthal-Zellerfeld Germany, son Gunnar Molkow (Nanni) in Geseke-Eringerfeld, Germany, son Peter Miasek (Donna) of Markham, Ontario, and daughter Viola Birss (Don Lawton) of Calgary. She is also survived by her seven beloved grandchildren: Sven and Heike Mielordt, and Jenny and Hanno Molkow, all of Germany, and Philip (Tami) Miasek, Elaine (Colin) Towe, and Donald Miasek, all of Ontario, as well as three great- grandchildren Ethan Purchase, Estelle Miasek, and Brooklyn Towe, all in Ontario. Esther was predeceased by her husband Joe in 1992.

Esther will be very much missed by all who knew her. She was a spiritual and deep-thinking person who was passionately interested in world events, politics, and religion, which made for many memorable times with family and friends. Her warm smile, youthful laugh, and gracious nature were contagious and an inspiration to all.

A Celebration of Esther’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made directly to Central United Church, 131 7th Avenue S.W., Calgary AB T2P 0W5 Ph: (403)269-3701, or The Salvation Army, 420 – 9 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 0R9 Ph: (403)410-1111,, or the Unitarian Service Committee Canada, 56 Sparks Street, Suite 705, Ottawa, ON K1P 5B1 Ph: (613) 234-6827,

  2. Hey Viola, A life well lived. Congratulations on the tender care, attention, and time you gifted your mom in her last days in this place. You did well together.

“Bees bring wax and honey together,
    then fly away to another,
    farther corner of the garden.
Our parents are like the bees—-
    seeker unites with sought,
    lover with beloved—-
    then they leave us.
    Wax, honey and garden remain.
Our body is like a beehive made of
the wax and honey of the love of God.
The beloved gives bees other forms
when they no longer need the old ones.
    The same with our souls.”
