MILTON, Norma Jean (nee McKenzie)

December 19, 1938 – Calgary, Alberta
December 3, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Norma Milton, beloved wife of Garry Milton of Calgary, Alberta, passed away in Foothills Medical Centre on December 3, 2017 at the age of 78 years.

Norma was born in Calgary but spent her early years on the family farm near Elnora, AB. After her father died in 1949, she and her mother moved to Calgary where Norma took the rest of her schooling. After graduating in 1956 from Crescent Heights High School she worked for Engineered Homes in Calgary, and later with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede in the late 1950’s. Norma met her husband to-be, Garry, over a cup of coffee in the shared lunch room of the office building where they both worked, in July of 1960. They were married in 1961, and pursued their working careers in Calgary until the fall of 1966, when they decided to sail by freighter across the Pacific, to experience other cultures in S.E. Asia – first in Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, and then on to Hong Kong where they worked and lived for one and a half years. This experience was then followed by a six week trip through Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. She and her husband then continued on from Singapore, by freighter as passengers, to temporally settle once again, in Melbourne Australia, where they lived and worked for the next 10 months. In the spring of 1969 they returned to Calgary, which has been their working, living and retired base through these past years.

Upon her return to Calgary, Norma began her post-secondary education path at the University of Calgary, in 1969 through 1974, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Canadian History. She worked for a period of time thereafter, as a researcher and editor of books written by various authors in Alberta. In later years she worked in the oil and gas industry, principally with Unocal Canada in Calgary, until her retirement in 1998.

Travel continued to be a strong desire in Norma’s life, and with her husband they visited many countries in Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavia, and to other areas of Asia, over the next 40 years, until health issues began to ground them, a few years ago.
Norma enjoyed many activities in daily life including reading, sewing, quilting, cooking & entertaining with friends, leadership roles in community functions and in local and international organizations, attendance at live theatre, musical and ballet performances, and in social gatherings with friends & relatives.

Norma is survived by her husband of 57 years, Garry and several cousins and their families. She was predeceased by her parents.

A private gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Norma Milton, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.
