MIELKE, Waldemar (Walt)

July 22, 2013 –Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce that Walt Mielke passed away peacefully at Rosedale Hospice, with his family by his side, on July 22, 2013, at the age of 70.

Walt was born in Chodecz, Poland, and immigrated to Canada in 1950 with his family. He grew up in Edmonton, where he acquired his education. Following graduation from U of A, Walt taught for the Calgary Board of Education for over 30 years at the following schools: Shawnessy Junior High, Crescent Heights High, Lord Beaverbrook High, and Forest Lawn High.

Walt is survived by his loving wife Jessie; two sons, David and Karl (Sheila); brother in-law Ed Maier; two nephews, Gary (Marcie) Mielke and Harry (Wendy) Maier; niece Carol (Ron) Manuel and their families. He was predeceased by his brother Irwin; father Otto; mother Benita and sister Phyllis (Maier).

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W.) on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.  The family would like to thank the doctors, staff and volunteers at Rosedale Hospice for their compassionate care and support as well as the staff at the Foothills Hospital.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Rosedale Hospice (920 7A Street N.W.

    July 30th – I am sorry to hear of Walter’s death.
    Walter’s eyes and the Mielke name take me back to Garneau school when I met and knew Walter in the 50s in Edmonton. He was one of the many boys I knew who had come from Europe.
