DEVALL – Michael Thomas

March 8, 1958 – May 22, 2010

Michael Thomas Devall, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by love with his family at his side on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the age of 52 years.

Mike was born in Innisfail, AB and moved around Alberta throughout his youth until finally settling in Edmonton in 1972. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1981. He married the love of his life, Kelly, on April 30, 1983, after seven years of dating! Mike’s life took on a whole new meaning when his daughter Caitlin was born in 1985 and his son Brennan in 1987. His focus was on being an involved and committed father. He not only accomplished that goal, he exceeded it. His children’s well-being was always his first priority.

Mike loved the simple things in life – spending time with family and friends, watching Oilers Hockey, boating in the Shuswap, and walking to Tim Hortons for his cup of coffee.

Professionally, he was a man who did his job with honour and integrity and was always willing to help out his colleagues and go the extra mile to get the job done right. He was a perfectionist in everything he did.

Mike showed us all that true strength and positive thinking could get you through anything in life. He was an amazing inspiration to his family and friends as he battled through this past year, not once complaining. He made us all proud.

Mike is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Kelly; daughter Caitlin; son Brennan; parents, Vernon and Theresa Devall; sisters Brenda (Brian), Shaunna (Dan), Veronica (Tod); brother Trevor; his second family, Alf and Sharon Watters; sisters-in-law, Laurie (Doug), Shannon (Peter), and Tracy; and by nieces and nephews, Avery, Zack, Chloe, Delaney and her Dad Wayne, Leanne, Michael, Kimberly and Ashley.

Funeral Services will be held at First Alliance Church (12345 – 40th Street S.E.) on Friday, May 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Written remembrances of Mike would be greatly appreciated by the family and may be brought to the service or forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, 620 Colborne Street, Suite 301, London, ON, N6B 3R9 Telephone: 1-800-265-5106. The family would like to thank Mike’s sisters for providing him with outstanding care in his final days allowing him to be at home.

In living memory of Michael Devall, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Bonnie and Manny Rossbach :

God saw you getting tired, a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you, and said,”come home with me. Now we think of you in silence, we often speak your name, all we have are memories, and your picture in a frame. If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane, we’d walk a path to heaven, and bring you home again. Our family chain is broken, nothing seems the same, but God calls us one by one, so the chain will link again. We pray to God in heaven, to take this message above, tell Dad (Mike) how much we miss him, and give him all our love……………..Our sincerest condolences to Kelly and Caitlin and Brennan. Kelly, Caitlin and Brennan
We were so sad to hear about Mike. Truly one of life’s tragedies for someone, like Mike, to be taken from this world so young. Mike definately left his footprint with everyone whom he came in touch with. A very remarkable person. Whenever we think of hockey, Mike always comes to mind. The world has truly lost one of the best. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am sending a little poem to you. I hope it can bring some comfort to you at this difficult time.

    When you’re all alone
And all you see are the shadows,
    Just close your eyes
    And I will be there,
    For deep in your heart,
Runs the blood same as mine.
    And in your mind
I will whisper my words of comfort.
    No Matter how close
    Or a lifetime of distance,
I will always be with you
All you need to do is close your eyes,
    When you are happy,
    I will laugh with you
    When your tears fall,
    I will feel your pain.
    When ever you need me
    Just close your eyes
I will always be with you.

    Take care.

The Legacy Of A Really Good Man Lives on Through His Family… Countless good deeds and unselfish gestures can add up over a lifetime to become the legacy of a really good man. A good man is gone and his absence will be felt. He made a difference in the lives of so many people because of all he was and all he did for others. The world won’t be the same without him. Such a good man could never be forgotten. Mike Devall is just that Man! I know sometime soon Kelly Caitlin and Brennan you will Live Love and Laugh again. The Perry Family.

    Kelly and Family,

Just saw Mike’s name in the U of A alumni magazine New Trail.

It’s been 25 years since we’ve been in contact with you, but we certainly remember sharing times together during high school and university days. And I recall sharing study time with Mike as we both pursued our EE degrees.

It is certainly a shock to read of Mike’s passing. Donna and I hope that you are doing ok and wish you our best.

I’m guessing that you are in Calgary, as are we. Perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to cross paths sometime.
