Metcalfe, Alexander Langler, P. Ag

Alex Metcalfe passed away peacefully on July 24, 2008 at the Colonel Belcher Care Facility in Calgary, AB. 

 He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Dearden) for almost 60 years and loving father to Eric (Rachel Lundstrom), Robert (Georgina Sousa), Joan (Bob Little), Barb (Jamie Tait) and Wendy (Craig Barker); being “Grandpa” to his 12 grandchildren (Curtis, Evan, Jenny, Jackie, Lena, Stephanie, Dylan, Colin, Darryl, Scott, Erin, & Erika).  He was predeceased by his father, Eric in 1929 and his mother, Gladys in 1983 and is survived by his sister, Catherine (Randy Phillips) in Brantford, Ont.  He was born in Montreal, QC., graduated from Strathcona Academy, Outremont, and MacDonald College, McGill University in Agriculture.  Before his graduation he served on the 410  RCAF  Squadron in 1941 – 1945.  He moved to Lethbridge, AB following graduation in 1951 as an employee of Birds Eye Frozen Foods.  He and his growing family settled in Calgary in 1961 where he started his long career with Calgary Power/Trans Alta Utilities as an agricultural specialist & later as economic development officer.  In 1981, he became Edmonton Regional Executive Assistant and then retired in 1987 from Trans Alta. In 1991, as founder of the Economic Developers of Alberta he was given an honourary life time membership and the Alex Metcalfe Award to recognize economic development excellence was established. Throughout his years of employment with Trans Alta he was privileged to serve in many community, provincial and national endeavours such as the Canadian Red Cross Society, United Way, Rotary, Calgary Stampede, Clean Calgary and others.  Traveling extensively in the province serving the farming communities and small towns brought him great pleasure. As a member of the Alberta Institute of Agrologists, he served a term as the president and Alberta Director on Agricultural Institute of Canada.   Alex devotedly served on many boards including most notably the Canadian Red Cross Society and the United Way.  He received the Order of the Red Cross in 1991and the 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal awarded by the Governor General of Canada in 1992.  Alex’s dedication to his commitment to Christ led to serving with the Presbyterian churches – St Andrews, Lethbridge; Knox and Grace, Calgary; and First Presbyterian, Edmonton- as both board and session member.  He was active establishing extension congregations, “Inn from the Cold”, service taping ministry, etc. He was honoured by being twice commissioned to the Presbyterian General Assembly and through this he served on the Board of World Missions.

He will be missed by all for his sense of humour & his dedication to his family and community.

 Funeral service will be held at Grace  Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15Avenue SW., Calgary, AB)  on July 30 , 2008 at 11:00 am.  Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. A special thank-you goes out to all staff of the Churchill House of the Colonel Belcher Care Facility, the staff of Stroke Unit in the Foothills Hospital, Lorraine Swift (private care giver) Ruth Longhurst (Palliative Care Consultant) and Dr. Obeyjangi  for their loving care and support of Alex and his extended family through the last few weeks of his life. As well, the family would like to thank his doctors John Hantho, Jack Williams, Andrew Maitland, and Bill Halliday for their attendance to Alex’s health over the years.
