METCALFE – James “Jim”

June 6, 1968 – March 31, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved son, brother and uncle, James “Jim” Metcalfe of Calgary, who passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the age of 42 years.

Jim was born and raised in Calgary, AB. He was a respected partner in his own company, Meridian Pipelines. Jim was highly regarded for his dedication and professionalism. The title that Jim wore most proudly, however, was “Uncle”. Jim was dedicated to family and always made those that he loved his first priority.

Jim will be forever remembered by his mother and best friend Ann; step dad Dave; brother Bruce (Le Ly); sisters, Linda (Bill), Lindsey (John); sister-in-law Lisa; and his treasured nephews, Braeden, Justin, Morgan, and Joshua. Jim will also be remembered by his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins in Scotland and Canada, as well as his extended family and close friends.

We will all miss his honesty, sense of humour and his unconditional love and support.

A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. To the loved ones of Jim, I just want you all to know how truly, deeply sorry I am to hear of Jim’s passing. Growing up in Cedarbrae with Jim, I can tell you we had may adventures together (to put it mildly) lot’s of laughs and fond memories. I will cherish every single one of them and I will not only miss him dearly but I know one day we will be kicking back having a “cold one” together again. Till we meet again my friend. Below is a really nice poem I thought may comfort you all. It helped me.

    Letter From Heaven

    To my dearest family, some things I’d like to say.
    But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
    I’m writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
    Here, there’s no more tears of sadness;
    Here is just eternal love.

    Please do not be unhappy just because I’m out of sight.
    Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
    That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
    God picked me up and hugged me and He said, “I welcome you.

    It’s good to have you back again,
    you were missed while you were gone.
    As for your dearest family, They’ll be here later on.
    I need you here badly, you’re part of my plan.
    There’s so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man,”

    God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
    And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
    And when you lie in bed at night the day’s chores put to flight.
    God and I are closest to you….in the middle of the night.

    When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
    Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
    But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
    Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

    I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
    If I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand.
    But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
    I’m closer to you now, than I ever was before.

    There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
    But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
    It was always my philosophy and I’d like it for you too;
    That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

    If you can help somebody who’s in sorrow and pain;
    Then you can say to God at night……”My day was not in vain.”
    And now I am contented…that my life was worthwhile.
    Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.

    So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low;
    Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
    When you’re walking down the street
    and you’ve got me on your mind;
    I’m walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

    And when it’s time for you to go….from that body to be free.
    Remember you’re not going…..you’re coming here to me.

  7. Ellie McIntosh-Barber :

    I was very saddened to learn of Jim’s passing today.

    I was friends with “Jimmy” when I was a very young girl. My parents always called him my first boyfriend. I remember many happy childhood years playing with Jimmy on Glamorgan Drive and he really was my first best friend.

    Even though approx 35 years or so has gone by…I vividly recall Jimmy always “saving my life with his sword as I was trapped in some evil tower!” …or eating my mom’s popsicles in the basement, or even seeing if we could lite rolled up paper using the furnace!:)

    I have often thought of him over the years and now, I realize that all relationships we have in life, from young kids to grown ups…help shape us and some of the best ones we can simply never forget. My Jimmy, was certainly one of them and I will think of him always.
