MERRYFIELD, George Alfred

June 21, 1947 – Calgary, Alberta
March 13, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

George Alfred Merryfield passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on March 13th, 2014 at the age of 66. George was born June 21, 1947 in Calgary, the first born of Jack and Joan Merryfield of Bragg Creek.

George lived his entire life in Bragg Creek. He attended school at Bragg Creek, Sheep Creek and graduated from Springbank High. From the time George first laid eyes on a steering wheel, he knew that all he wanted to do was drive. And drive he did! Besides his own private trucks, he owned and operated a school bus for delivering students safely to Springbank School for many years. He went on to make a career as a professional commercial vehicle operator. He enjoyed the Merryfield family camping trips to Kananaskis, Banff and B.C. He loved the Merryfield family gatherings at Ghost Village and the Burby family reunions. He loved to visit with his many friends. George always loved to travel and he continued travelling throughout his life. He enjoyed taking his elderly parents on many outing and camping trips. Upon retirement, George spent his winters in Arizona and met many wonderful new friends. He spent his summers at the Burby Ranch south of Bragg Creek where he loved to offer his hospitality. George was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, and a great friend.

Thank you to the wonderful doctors and staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital ICU, Phoenix, Arizona, and to the doctors and staff at the Foothills Medical Centre ICU and all of George’s friends for their kindness and support at this difficult time.

George is survived by his mother, Joan Merryfield; brother, Jim; sisters, Carol Storey and Marie (John) Nylund; nephews, Leo Nylund, Guy Nylund and Dan Merryfield; nieces, Nancy-Lee Nylund and Michelle Weaver and their families. He is also survived by his devoted little dog “Havoc”.

A Celebration of George’s life will be held at the Bragg Creek Community Centre (23 White Avenue, Bragg Creek, Alberta), on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  11. My condolences to the family. George was a wonderful, kind person who I had the honor to know and the privilege of being one of his multitude of friends. I have many fine memories of pot lucks and campfires that a lot of his friends and I spent together in the desert at Quartzsite, AZ over the years. George enjoyed people and the simple things of life. George stayed a few weeks at my place in Kingman, AZ and worked every day on constructing the footer to my house and solar array. He would not take anything for his work; I would have to drag him in to town for dinner every day, that is the only payment he would take. He was always willing to help anybody that needed help. He was a true friend and will be missed very much. Jim

  13. Cousin George was truly a good soul and will be missed so much. Every time his trucking route took him to Vancouver, he would phone or visit his Aunt Joan and Uncle Vic and they loved the time spent with him. I know that my Dad, my brother Miles and I will forever miss his happy nature and kindness. Marie, Carol and Jim, we all share in your loss and look forward to lifting a glass with you to celebrate George’s life.
