MENZIES – Arthur Whyte

MENZIES Arthur Whyte obituaries

November 2, 1925 – November 15, 2009

Respected for an accomplished career in oil exploration and deeply loved as a father and husband, Arthur Menzies, 84, died peacefully in God’s grace and the presence of family on Sunday, November 15, 2009. Born in Regina, the son of Jean and Garnet Menzies served as an RCAF navigator before marrying his sweetheart, Dolly Jones of Rouleau, and obtaining his BSc at the U of Manitoba. They built a full life – he as a geophysicist and she as his love, wife and mother of three children – that stretched from the dusty fields of southern Saskatchewan through Alberta and on to assignments in Walton-on-Thames, Rio de Janeiro, Calgary and London, England. His travels took him throughout Africa and the Middle East, to every continent and culture. He worked for Imperial Oil and Esso before retiring from Kuwait Foreign Petroleum to work as an international consultant. A member of the CSEG, CSPG, APEGGA and a fellow of the Geological Society England, his work was published in professional journals. He served as an elder and choir member at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian and was known to his peers at the Calgary Burns Society and Canyon Meadows golf club for his wit, wisdom and camaraderie.

He is survived by Dolly, his wife of more than 60 years, daughter Jennifer (Bob Henry) of Dunrobin, ON; sons Peter (Pat) of Calgary, Graeme of Vancouver; five grandchildren Patrick Henry, Paige Henry, Ashley Menzies, Evan Menzies and Baird Menzies. Arthur was predeceased by his sisters Sheena in 1955 and Mary in 2004.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Dr. S.W.) on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent directly to the Alzheimers Society. The family would like to express its thanks for the loving and compassionate care of the staff at Rockyview Hospital unit 47. We are eternally grateful.

In living memory of Arthur Menzies, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

Dear Dolly and family We were very saddened to hear about Art’s passing. Hope he wasn’t sick for too long and didn’t suffer. It seems very strange you had been on my mind the last few days and I was meaning to call you but will do that soon. I guess someone was trying to tell me something. Take care of yourselves and keep all those good memories close by. All our Love Christine, John and family

My deepest sympathies to you and your wonderful family at this extraordinary sorrowful time. We have had Art in our prayers for many months now and, while we are deeply saddened by his passing, we rest assured that he is now happier and livelier than he has been in recent months.
