December 29, 1927 – Stettler, Alberta
March 22, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Jean Melling passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Chinook Care Centre at the age of 86 years.
She will be greatly missed by her son, Tom; daughter-in-law Cindy; and her most beloved grandsons Kevin and Richard. Jean was predeceased by Keith Pettis (1954) and Dr. Thomas Melling (1967).
Jean was born in Stettler, moving to Calgary in 1946 to begin Nursing Training at the Calgary General Hospital, graduating in 1949. While raising her young son, Tom, Jean carried on with an active life which included volunteering with the Samaritan Club, curling and bowling at The Glencoe Club, and a term as President of the Ladies Golf section at the Calgary Golf & Country Club. Jean was also involved with the Mt. Royal Community Association organizing the Block Watch of which she was chairman for ten years. Jean got immense enjoyment from her friends, as well as Tom’s, and could be counted on by young and old to lend an ear or provide counsel. Some of Jean’s happiest times were the five years she lived at The Manor Village at Garrison Woods where she made many new friends and renewed old acquaintances. In Jean’s declining health her friends became even more important and she enjoyed every conversation that was had. We will all remember Jean’s sense of humour which was present right to the end.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Her family would sincerely like to thank all of the staff and caregivers at Staywell and Chinook Care Centre, along with Dr. Barbara Scurfield, for the exceptional attention and kindness given to Jean.
