McPHAIL, Hector “Joseph”

December 24, 1944 – April 28, 2013

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe McPhail, beloved husband of Anne McPhail (nee O’Reilly) of Calgary, AB, on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the age of 68 years, after a short illness. Joe was a loving son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and son-in-law.

He was born in Toronto on December 24, 1944 to Rose and Hector McPhail. Joe grew up in Toronto and did all of his schooling there except for two years spent in California with his sister Betty.

Joe became a journeyman sheet metal worker and worked in that trade for forty-three years in Toronto, Medicine Hat and Calgary. He was a proud union man and loved his trade. Joe served two terms as President of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 30, 1988-1991 and 1993-1994. In 1994, he became a Business Agent until he retired in 2006. Joe also seated as a Trustee to the Pension and Welfare Committee on December 3, 1991 before becoming elected to the chair on June 4, 1996 and held that seat until July 31, 2006 when he retired.

Joe married the love of his life Anne on June 25, 1983 and a year later moved back to Toronto where they lived and worked for twenty-four years. In 2008, they moved back to Calgary to be closer to his children and Anne’s family.

Joe was a gregarious and enthusiastic individual who was always up for a party. He was full of life and above all loved his family. He was generous, kind and outspoken with an amazing sense of humour that he shared with everyone he met. He loved his pets, Lucy, Willy and Spike. One of his favorite things to do each day was to walk his beloved Lucy. Joe loved good Scotch, good wine and good food. He was an avid golfer and devoted Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

Joe will be lovingly remembered and missed by many.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Anne; son James “JJ” McPhail; and daughters, Marcia (John) Conway and Sarah McPhail. He is also survived by his sisters, Betty (Brian) O’Kelly, Jean Vangel, Rosemary (Sherry) Trombley, and Margaret McPhail (Mike); brother Frank (Vivian) McPhail; brother-in-law John Hall; and grandchildren, Liam, Haidyn, Kera, Kayli, Kevin, and Kyle.

Joe was predeceased by his father Hector; mother Rose; sisters, Marjorie Hall and Kathleen McPhail; sister-in-law Michelle O’Reilly; and brother-in-law Al Vangel.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W.) on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  15. Darrin McPhail :

I know Joe meant a lot of things to many people, and this week I was taken aback from his sudden passing and have reflected on his memory the past few days . I knew Joe from when I was very young up until my early 20’s before he moved back out West. In other words, my most impressionable years. We were born in the same Hospital (St Joseph in TO) delivered by the same doctor.

Things I remember about my Uncle Joe…

Taking JJ & me tobogganing at Centenial Park in Etobicoke.
Riding around in a van pouring samples from the Pop Shop, then taking us all to Pizza Hut.
Taking JJ & I out on Aunt Maureen’s boat fishing up at the cottage.
Went to an Argo’s game with him and my dad after many Budwiesers, just a fun cool guy to be around.
Sitting in the back seat with a frog in a jar while Joe and my Dad drove the car into the lake for a laugh !
Helping him do the roof of my parents house, this was the early 80’s and he had The Cars music blasting all day long. He then made his famous bbq lasagne. For desert, he’d wake my sister and I up at 2am after doing shooters and cook sausages on the bbq. Lots of laughs and fun.
Lighting one of my fire crackers at the dining room table and tossing in his wine glass to put it out. Instead it exploded and we had wine all over the ceiling. Joe had a thing for explosives apparently.
Joe had a very humorous way of looking at things and getting away with it, not afraid to call out that 500 lb gorilla in the room.
That he was a fighter, would not tolerate injustice and stand up to authority. I aspired to have some of these same traits that he made look so easy. I’ll miss my Uncle Joe and his candor and always have a smile when I think of him.
