August 14, 1935 – March 8, 2013
Neil, beloved husband of Jean McManus (nee Orr) of Calgary, passed away on Friday March 8, 2013 at the age of 77 years.
Neil was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on August 14, 1935. He finished high school at the tech in Saskatoon; then attended STI in Moose Jaw where he met Jean and fell in love. He graduated Civil Engineering in 1961 and moved to Calgary. He and Jean were married April 26, 1962.
Neil enjoyed walking in Bowness Park, bouncing balls with his kids and building custom furniture. He re-finished several picnic tables in Bowness Park as a labour of love; and he even suited up as a Santa for the Salvation Army.
Neil was always preparing family feasts for the holidays and enjoyed Christmas baking for family and friends. He had a passion for reading, dancing and baking. He was known for his sweet tooth. He liked to watch TV and enjoy a favorite drink. He quit smoking in 2005 after 55 years. Many trips to California with Neil at the wheel are unforgettable memories; also the family trip to Expo ‘67 in Montreal.
Neil had a love for the simple things in life; from music, especially records, to parties. He had a phenomenal memory and was very friendly and engaging to everyone he crossed paths with, always calling them by name. He had a great sense of humour; everyone will remember with fondness the great elastic band fight, which involved the whole family.
Besides his loving wife Neil is survived by his daughters Cathy Hiebert (Michael Ivey) and JoAnne Alpaerts (Joel); grandchildren Melanie Sinneave (Steve McDonald), Melissa Poitras, Richard Alpaerts (Jessica Barclay), Jessie Rogers (Jake) and Daniel Ivey (Charlotte Porter); great-grandchildren Lucius Clark, Dakota Algar, Lily Rogers and Kayden Alpaerts. Neil is also survived by his brother Dale Edighoffer (Debbie); sister MaryLynn Waschuk (Ron); sister-in-law Doreen McManus; and their extended families.
Neil was predeceased by his parents Ina and Orbin Edighoffer; brother Barry McManus; and mother-in-law Alice Orr.
