McLAREN, Vera (nee Sutherland)

Our dear aunt and sister, Vera McLaren passed away January 19, 2014 at the age of 99 years.

Born on December 8, 1914 she was the 4th child of seven born to William and Mabel Sutherland. She grew up on the family farm in the Shepard District and began her teaching career in 1936; taking positions at various rural schools in the province and finally Black Diamond, AB where she remained for twenty years. In 1965 she married Stewart McLaren, a farmer in the Madden/Dog Pound area. Upon their retirement, they moved to the Big Hill Lodge in Cochrane, AB where Vera resided until 2013 when failing health required a move to the Chinook Care Centre where she lived out her life.

Vera is survived by her sister Alice Paton and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Stewart in 2007; her parents; four brothers and one sister.

A Family Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family sincerely thank the staff of both Chinook Care Centre and Big Hill Lodge for the kindness and care Vera was given in the declining years of her life. To us, she was an extraordinary woman of independence, conviction and tenacity with a deep rooted love for family.
