McLaren, Beryl Leticia

Beryl Leticia McLaren, beloved wife of Ross McLaren of Calgary, passed away at home on Monday, July 21, 2008 at the age of 74 years. Beryl was born in Saltcoats, SK on October 28, 1933.  She began her married and family life in Langenburg, SK, where she made life long friends. Everyone who met Beryl admired her. With her strength of character, determination and strong spirit, she was a model for others. Beryl had a quick wit and a dry sense of humour which made everyone laugh. She was an inspiration. Beryl moved to Calgary, in a 1963 Ford Galaxie with her husband, four children and two cats on July 20, 1969. As Beryl and her family were landing in Calgary, there were astronauts landing on the moon. There really were two giant leaps that day. Beryl’s passion was her children for whom she lived each day. She did not want to leave them. She also had a zest for life and did not want to “miss a thing.” She lived each day to the fullest with relentless vigor and endless energy. Beryl loved music and the saxophone that her husband Ross played. Spruce Meadows was a home away from home for Beryl where she jumped every jump with the horses. During her thirty-nine years in Calgary, Beryl demonstrated the most incredible work ethic in all areas of work ending with her role at United Library Services. Beryl was an avid reader and loved all literature and authors. Her position at United Library Services, from where she retired in 1998, 2000 and finally on June 21 2005, was the perfect match. With courage and confidence Beryl travelled to Europe, Australia and Alaska. She wanted to see the world. The Maritimes are next. Now this is an opportunity for Beryl to embark on a new journey and a well – deserved rest without the struggle and discomfort of cancer. Besides her loving husband, Beryl was loved and will be sorely missed by her children, Lowell, Randy, Jacki, and Jan; and her sister Audrey McLaren. Beryl will also be missed by her loving brothers and sisters in law, Elsie Hillis, Bev and Rae McLaren, Lorne and Barb McLaren, and Margaret Hillis. Beryl is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly with a great respect and admiration. Beryl is predeceased by her parents Harold and Olive Hillis and her brothers, Jack and Leonard Hillis.  Beryl has many friends who will dearly miss her in their daily lives. We love you, Beryl! A Celebration of Beryl’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 12:00 p.m.   Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
