McKINNON, Barbara Isabel

April 5, 1926 – February 21, 2015

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Barbara Isabel McKinnon (nee Patton) of Calgary, passed away willingly and with gentle dignity as she did all things, on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the age of 88 years.

Barbara was born in Medicine Hat, April 5, 1926 to Harold and Louise Patton (nee Kent). Excelling in Mathematics, Barbara became a teller at The Bank of Commerce after high school. During that time she met James Bower McKinnon, an aspiring pilot in training in the RCAF. They married on a sunny day, June 1, 1946 in Medicine Hat. After the birth of Sandy and Jack, they relocated their young family to Calgary in 1951.

Barbara’s life was dedicated to her family and to the service of others. She believed in the goodness of the heart, the strength of the soul and the unwavering love of family and friends.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of sixty-eight years Jim; daughter Heather (Rick) Park; son Kerry (Ginette) McKinnon; grandchildren, Brad Rae, Andrew and Sheena McKinnon, and Douglas and Suzanne Park; and great-granddaughters, Alexandra and Sophia Zagas.

Barbara was predeceased by her eldest children, Sandra and Jack; as well as granddaughter Cheryl de Champlain-Zagas.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. John Crowdis of St. Matthew’s United Church presiding. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Elisabeth Woolner and the wonderful staff at Wentworth Manor for the kind care of Barbara over the past five years.
