McKINLEY, Geraldine Louise “Cookie” (nee Cook)

June 21, 1930 – June 1, 2012

Mom’s early years were spent growing up in Winnipeg with her Mother, Father and 2 sisters. Her Father, a pilot, was killed during WWII in a tragic plane crash during a training exercise when she was 10 years old. She missed him deeply her entire life.

Life was not easy for Mom but she persevered and became a strong, determined and kind woman who “paid it forward” whenever she had an opportunity. She was the Mom that all our friends went to when they needed advice, the Mom that everyone else wanted as theirs.

Mom lost her husband and best friend Roy in 2006, which marked the beginning of her physical decline. Daughter-in-law Kay, stepdaughter Gail and son-in-law Jim predecease Mom.

We, her children, can never thank her enough for the strength she showed us and the guidance she gave us. We hope that she knew how many people she touched and how much she was loved by so many.

Missing her deeply – Children: Andrew McCann, Judi Smith, Doug McCann (Michele), Thom McCann and Gordon McCann (Linda). Stepdaughters: Carol Villemaire and Donna MacIvor and families. Grandchildren: Kris, Casey, Tyler, Cass, David and Jeffrey. Great Grandchildren: Chelsea, Jordan, Dakota, Alexis and Max. Sisters: Shirley Alexander and Mary Ellen Will and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Diane Brunka, Mom’s niece, who gave so much time and took such care the last months of Mom’s life.

Thank you to the staff – who went above and beyond – and residents of Rockyview Lodge in Crossfield where Mom spent many comfortable years and the amazing staff of Rockyview General Hospital Palliative Care for their compassion and kindness – Mom’s passing was as gentle and comfortable as possible with your care.

We miss you Mom.

Mom requested that a service not be held but that her ashes be scattered in the future.

If so desired, donations can be made in her name to your local SPCA or the Royal Canadian Legion – two organizations that were very important to her.

  2. Brynn Logan :

Geri was an inspirational woman, she may have been slight in stature but she was giant in spirit. Geri taught unconditional love, compassion and a lot of patience throughout the years that I was blessed to have known her. Roy and Geri will now continue in the afterlife, best friends forever.

Sending my love to you all.

  3. Linda McCann (nee Thompson) :

She was a wonderful mother and you certainly captured it when you said she was the mother that everyone else wanted. I know she helped me immensely during my troubled time in White Rock. I am lucky to have known and loved her.

I hope that you remember only the good times and that those memories act as a balm for the pain of her loss.

And what a great picture you chose. She lives on in all of you.

    Lots of love,

  4. Carol Alexander :

Geraldine will be missed by many. As a niece who did not see her much over the years, I was delighted to get a visit in with her just a few months ago. Her positive spirit brought light into the room. I know my mother is going to miss her sister, Geraldine, very much.
Be at peace Geraldine. And may all those who loved you find a way to make peace with your passing.
