McKENZIE, H. George

September 3, 1945 – Saint-Jean-Sur Richelieu, Quebec
August 17, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

George was an accomplished lawyer (with appearances before the Supreme Court), an avid and active sportsman (Vanier Cup champion, expert skier, and golfer with multiple holes-in-one to his credit), a dulcet-toned singer (barbershop bass extraordinaire and holiday season Pavarotti), but most importantly a caring and devoted family man. He passed away with his family by his side, sharing treasured music and memories.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Patricia (Coghlan), his children Bryan and Sarah, and his adored grandchildren Abigail, Benjamin and Andrew. He also leaves behind his sister Charlotte, brother Raymond and legions of friends and relatives that meant the world to him, as he meant a lot to them. Cancer ended George’s life but never dampened his humour, his spirits, or his love for his family and friends. The family would like to thank his doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for the care he received through his illness and the staff at the Sarcee Hospice for his peaceful final days.

Above all, George loved his grandchildren. If desired, memorial donations can be made in his honour to the Alberta Children’s Hospital (www.childrenshospital.ab.ca) or the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (www.cheo.on.ca) to ensure that others can experience the same joy of being a grandparent. The family would also ask that you consider making a blood donation in memory of George as he received many transfusions through his treatment (blood.ca).

George will be remembered in both Calgary and Ottawa so that all who loved him will have the opportunity to celebrate his life.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. He will also be remembered at a memorial reception in Ottawa on August 27 at 3:30 pm at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club at 1405 Aylmer Road, Gatineau, Quebec.
Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of George McKenzie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Jennifer Reid :

We are all thinking about you… such an incredibly difficult time and I know your hearts are aching. What a great role model George is for all of us cousins – he had a love and passion for his family that was only multiplied when the grandchildren arrived. A blessing to be so loved for us all.

I will see you all soon in Ottawa.
Love -Jenn, Larry, McKenzie and Eric

I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with George for several years at Felesky Flynn and found him a wonderful human being. I also was the lucky person who got his old paving bricks from his garden renovation and think of him fondly whenever I do the upkeep to the sidewalk where the pavers now are in use. He had a wonderful smile and a twinkle in his eye that we all appreciated at FF. Warm thoughts to all the family.

  6. Gillian Clarke :

I was situated very close to George’s office when employed at Felesky Flynn between 2002 and 2006. George always had a smile, a kind word, or some sort of funny anecdote to share and I could never visit or even pass by his office without a good long look at the fabulous artwork hanging on his office walls. His choices were very different to anything I had seen before in an office situation, and were incredible to look at.

My condolences to George’s family I am sure you will miss him terribly, but I hope that the many memories you share of times spent with such a wonderful man give you strength in the sad moments.

Thinking of you all – Gillian Clarke (former legal assistant to Craig Jones)

  7. I was the librarian at Felesky Flynn for many years and knew George well. I admired and respected him, and enjoyed our conversations. I loved the artwork that was in his office and sometimes I would find an excuse to drop into his office even when he wasn’t there, just so I could enjoy the paintings. I retired a year and a half ago, but I’ve kept up with the office and with George’s condition. My deepest condolences to his friends and family – he will be missed.

  11. It was a pleasure to have George appear in the Tax Court and he will be missed. He was always prepared, his questions to witnesses always pertinent, his arguments were well organized and, as judges appreciate, were on point and short. And, perhaps because I knew him in Ottawa, George’s answers to my questions during his argument often contained a humourous gem. The staff of the Tax Court found George cooperative and a delight to work with. A top notch lawyer and person.

I regret that because I will be out of the country on the 27th I will miss George’s memorial reception.

  16. My deepest sympathies to the McKenzie family.

I remember George growing up in the Alta Vista area of Ottawa. We both played baseball in the Rideau Park Little League and the Alta Vista Babe Ruth League back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. George was giant among us boys and I remember our Mutt and Jeff resemblance on the few occassions that I made it to first base. George was a feared hitter and smashed a few ‘Ruthian’ blasts out onto Kilborn Avenue. I also remember fondly George stepping on my hand as I dove back into first base on a pick-off attempt. The scars and bruises healed but the fond memory prevails.

I pray that the painful days ahead will be eased by a lifetime of good memories.

Auntie Pat, Sarah, Ben, Abigail, Bryan, Tracy & Andrew,

We are so sorry for your loss – Uncle George was a very special person. I can only imagine how important he was to each of you and he will stay with you forever. I will never forget the song that Uncle George sang at Bryan and Tracys wedding…it was beautiful and and funny (and it also took a lot of guts to stand up and sing acapella in front of so many people!). We ate ribs at the cottage on the bbq a few weeks ago with the Uncle George recipe w Oyster sauce – they were delicious. We are thinking of you today while you hold the funeral in Calgary and we look forward to giving you each a hug when we see you in Ottawa.

  23. Kerry and Craig Callan-Jones :

Dear Pat, Bryan, wSarah and Families,

You were all in our thoughts yesterday as you said good-bye to dear George. Craig and I were remembering some of the funny times we shared over 45 years of friendship. Do you remember camping for one night near the St. Lawrence River in July 1970? The four of us were in a tent , the rains came, George and Craig tried to build a trench but to no avail. We were soaked. The Starrs joined us the next morning, saw the mess and we all headed back to Ottawa and had dinner in the Starr’s back yard. I recently found two faded photos of the six of us in Starr’s back yard. A wonderful memory.
You have all been through such a difficult time supporting George through his illnesses. George is now at peace. May all of the happy memories help sustain you as you grieve his loss. We will miss George and that twinkle in his eye when he smiled.
Our deepest sympathies to all of you.
    Love Kerry and Craig

    Pat,
It is with sadness that I read the Calgary Herald Obituaries and saw Georges smiling face. In many ways that is how I remember George. The few times we talked, I could tell he was a man of great character.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you on your many landscaping projects. All the best in whatever journey you choose.

  25. Marlene and Bob Legare :

    Pat,

It was with great sadness that we learned this past weekend of George’s passing last August. The years from 2003-2010 that I was with Felesky Flynn LLP in Calgary were made especially memorable and rewarding because of the great privilege and pleasure I had to work with George and to get to know him on a more personal level during the several social events and retreats we shared. I had the highest regard for George, not just as a lawyer, but as a beautiful human being. He was especially encouraging and generous to me and played an important role (more than he realized at the time) in the advancement of my career. You have our deepest sympathies in your loss and Bob and I continue to hold you and your family in our prayers.
