McKENDRY – James “Jim” Gerard

October 2, 1937 – October 29, 2010

James “Jim” Gerard McKendry beloved husband, father, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, after living with lung cancer for the past year and a half, on Friday, October 29, 2010 at the age of 73 years.

Born and raised in Calgary, Jim graduated with a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) in 1960 from the University of Alberta. A life-long member of APEGGA, Jim began his career at Consolidated Concrete in 1962, becoming a general manager in 1976. In 1981, he became a vice president and held various executive roles until he retired in 1999 from Lehigh Inland. Jim had a passion for the outdoors and his activities included hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing and running. The beauty of nature inspired his photography and music and books fuelled his soul. Jim gave back to his community in his retirement years, building homes for Habitat for Humanity. His family will always be grateful for his dry sense of humour, wisdom, humility, generosity, dignity and unselfishness.

Jim leaves to mourn Lorraine, his wife of forty-four years, and his children, Virginia (William), Michelle (Ron), Rachael and Brian (Kristin), brother Bob (Renate), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary; sisters, Mary and Isobel; and brothers, John and Brian.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to Habitat for Humanity Calgary at www.habitat.org. Jim and his family so appreciated the health professionals who cared for him including Dr. Saren Azer, Dr. Desiree Hao and Nurse Camillia, his home care nurses, Barb, Helen and Teresa, his care-givers, Michelle and Eric and the entire staff of the Foothills Country Hospice.

Bye for now Jim.

  17. Roger and Cisca Bye :

We’ve lost a great guy and a great friend and, of course, those closest to him feel the greatest loss of all. Cisca and I send heartfelt condolences to Lorraine and the family – our sincere thoughts are with you.
I first met Jim thirty years ago at Consolidated Concrete where he was variously my boss and a colleague but quickly became a mentor and friend. Even though my time in Calgary was relatively short and my visits infrequent, I have many great memories of hiking and cross-country skiing with Jim (and Lorraine) and of shared dinners and the essential glass or two of wine afterward. During those times there were always stories and conversations which were liberally peppered with Jim’s great sense of humor and zest for life. That humor and love of life stayed with him even during the most difficult parts of his illness and our phone calls over the last year or so were always times of easy conversation, laughter and enjoyment – not an ounce of self pity. Jim took life as it came at him and always made the best of it. He leaves behind a wonderful family that he loved above all else, and numerous friends and colleagues who will miss him in many different ways.
    Sail on old friend.
